Incredible game and atmosphere. Defending champion Florida had shown no signs of letting up,including a 33-20 win in the Swamp over Peyton Manning and the Vols. LSU was #14 with a loss three weeks earlier to Auburn, and a 7-6 win over Vanderbilt the week earlier. Cecil Collins broke his leg in that game and LSU hung on after a late VU score. First Vandy was going to go for two,but got a delay a game penalty. So then future Midway Bridge Toll Booth operator Woody Widenhofer elected to tie..but Vandy got ANOTHER delay of game penalty. LSU then blocked the eventual try.

"Shiny Pants" of course is a shot at Steve Spurrier by then LSU DC Carl Reese. The two had coached against one another in the USFL and evidently weren't too crazy about each other. Reese called him Shiny Pants alluding to Reese thought Spurrier spent too much time playing golf.

"Game Day" came to town, and if it wasn't THE first, it was one of the first "Gold Games" that was 'modestly' ahered to by LSU fans. Anyhow, LSU played a game for the ages with one of the best game plans (note I said "one" of the best so no one needs to melt down with other examples). Florida QBs were under attack all night . LSU got up 14-0 and led 14-7 at halftime. The Gators tied it and it was 14 all going into the 4th. The Tigers got up 28-14 after a Cedric Donaldson pick 6 and hung on 28-21.

Of LSU's four touchdowns, two were on one play drives, one was a pick six and one was a 4 play 30 yard drive.

No wet blankets, everyone knows what happened the next week.

Amazing night. Only time I’ve rushed the field and would never do it again. I wish I still had the piece of goal post padding I acquired.

I was there that night. The atmosphere was crazy. Wife and I flew in from Miami for the game. I think I was the only one not dressed in orange and blue. The fans were an arrogant bunch much like their coach. Beating them that night was so damn satisfying. Of course the flight back home to Miami was a lot of fun.

Florida and Spurrier had dominated LSU for so long...including a 56-13 arse kicking the year before...that there was very little thought before the game LSU could win. Even though LSU was ranked #14. The narrow escape at Vandy coupled with losing Collins for the season further reinforced that thought. If anyone tells you today they were confident LSU would win BEFORE the game they are full of shite.

LSU received the opening kickoff and went on a great drive. Faulk nearly broke a long TD run on the 3rd or 4th play of the drive. LSU eventually got inside the 20 (largely on the back of Faulk) where they brought in Rondell Mealy...who immediately fumbled on his first carry. It felt like all the air had been let out of the stadium and LSU blew its chance gain early moment. The collective thought was "shite! There went our shot. Now Florida is going to do what Florida always does to us...kick our arse".

But that didn't happen. LSU got a sack and forced a punt. Faulk nearly broke the return for a TD and Herb Tyler ran it in from 40 one play later. A few plays after that Johnson threw his first Int to Donaldson...who nearly returned it for a TD. That set up LSU's second TD a play later to go up 14-0 and Tiger Stadium all collectively looked at each other and said "Holy shite! Could this happen tonight?" No one sat down the rest of the game.

That game is on a vhs tape somewhere. That, or there is an old vhs porno lying around because I'm pretty sure at one point I used the label "LSU v Florida 1997" to conceal the actual contents of the tape

I miss those days when the fans didn't deck themselves head to toe in "gameday gear." When did that all change?

There's not a single person in that photo of the goal post going down wearing any LSU clothing.

One of my Top 5.

Old School Crowd......Real and authentic College Football atmosphere.

The only "Noise" needed were the collective voices of LSU students, fans and TGBFTL. (Not this fake and sanitized BS that the LSUAD has forced upon the masses currently )

This is what I recall as well. I was at the top of the student section, but no one sat the entire game!!! We were up yelling and screaming our heads off all game.

And I still love the pregame festivities when Florida fans tried to mock the student section with their "Work 'Em Silly Gators" banner to only have it taken by a student, thrown into the student section, and ripped to shreds.

I was in the SEZ, next to the UF section. That is the only LSU game in history in which I took MUCH more joy from them losing than us winning. I also took home a nice little scar on my leg from trying to jump the fence while holding a $1200 camcorder. The "amazing" video I took that night looks grainer and shakier than my most recent colonoscopy.

Damn sure was, by far the loudest game I've ever been to. It was rockin all night, sounded like every person in the stadium was screaming in "your" ear. I couldn't hardly talk for a couple days, lol. That last drive by Florida the noise was unbelievable and when LSU held, pandemonium ensued. Student section ran over and did the gator chomp at the Florida fans , people tearing up turf and tearing down the goal posts.

NEZ seats and rushed the field. I still have the plastic drink cup with some blades of grass from the end zone in it. That was also the last game I’ve attended in Tiger Stadium. Part of me never wants to go back because it will never be like that again.

Was this the game where Spurrier had a meeting with the team the night before and said something like “Let’s score our 50 and get the hell out of here”?
