I started Tom Clancy’s so-called Ryanverse (possible spoilers)

I’ve never read a single Tom Clancy novel and decided to go in chronological order. So I started reading Without Remorse. I know Ryan only makes a cameo in the novel but I’m still enjoying the origin story of John Clark just over 200 pages in. Sad what happened to Pam. I can’t wait to see Tucker get his, the evil bastard.

It's been many years, but I think you will enjoy the series.

Reading them in the order written would make the prequel you are reading now a bit more meaningful, with quite a few references to people or relatives of people who show up in the later books.

I've often wondered how those books would stand up for someone who didn't personally live during the Cold War. Are you old enough to remember that?

I am too young to remember vietnam, so that prequel felt like historical fiction to me, and I would guess the rest of the series would feel that way to someone with no living memory of the Cold War

I hope we eventually get a Without Remorse movie.

Withour Remorse was my least favorite. I prefer the grand scale of war, political intrigue etc. Debt of Honor, Executive Orders and The Cardinal of the Kremlin are my favorites. While not in the Ryanverse, Red Storm Rising is fantastic too.

The Hunt for Red October is the first Jack Ryan book and one of the greatest novels ever written.

I read Hunt for Red October back some years ago, loved it, but then never read another Clancy novel until like 2019 when I randomly picked up Patriot Games at an airport and decided to work my way through the Ryanverse as well. I read them in published order, through Executive Orders. I was super stoked about Without Remorse (even though it's not exactly a Ryan book) because I love Clark. However, it was easily my least favorite of the series. Cardinal of the Kremlin was probably my favorite. Loved them all, even if Debt of Honor and Executive Orders got to be a little "too much".

Havent read anything past Executive Orders, and I'm not sure if I will. Seems like it was a good wrap-up on that universe to me.

Update:

I’m currently about halfway through The Hunt For Red October. It absolutely blows my mind how unfaithful the movie adaptations of this book, Patriot Games, and Without Remorse were.

I missed this thread the first time around. It should be said that Red Storm Rising (not a Ryanverse, although it has a Ryan proxy) remains my favorite Clancy novel.

It was a damned fine video game, too, back in the day.
