They determine the genetic code. In this case the spike protein. When you hear 30 mutations in the spike protein of the "omicron" varient that's how they know. They compare it to the original virus. Same thing happened with the delta. ...

They test to see if your positive by PCR. Then they sequence it. And they probably randomly sequence all positive samples. The test will only let you know if you have it or not. Unless there is a false positive. ...

The virus isn't patented, they just sell it.
The ATCC is a central repository for biological materials including bacteria, human cell lines, and viruses. Where do you think scientists get the material to study pathogens, they buy them.
Now I can't speak to the royalties part but the guy listed...

Morgan knocked out or killed the wolf that talked to him in ep516. Rick killed the blond headed wolf at the RV towards the end of the episode (ep603...with his python!...
