Thanks for the replies.
Considering the smart watch, as he already has an I phone. A problem with that is he's got spotty cellular coverage at his house. Ridiculous actually as he lives in the middle of one of those Dell Web golf course communities. When I visit him I miss a lot of calls....

My elderly father is trying to stay at home, basically alone. We do have a lot of family nearby, including my sister in the house next door. We need a simple “panic button” that he could push to let someone at the house next door that he needs assistance.
