They will eventually figure it out. Mine did after a couple days of me doing the same thing your doing it's designed so the birds could get water as needed I check mine every day and it doesn't have water in the cup but I see the chickens peck at it and drink from it...

Even with LF7 Guise I expected to see NB carry the ball a little more than what he did. If he don't get more touches this coming year then you know it's a problem. I hope the best for him but he seems weak and fragile ...
