What's the deal with Secondary Security Screening Selection?

Tried to onlinecheck me and my lady in on our return flight from Spain to the US via Delta. Delta allowed my wife to online check-in but not me. I called Delta to find out what the issue was and they couldn't tell me anything. I started googling and found out that I'm likely getting a "SSSS" on my boarding ticket and going through extra security, which is exactly what happened.
This was very inconvenient and quite frankly, stupid. I'm a TSA pre-check qualifier due to military service and my wife is not, yet I was selected and she wasn't. This was the first time I've had to do this. Does anyone know why I was selected?

Completely random who gets the dreaded SSSS on the boarding pass. Just get to the airport and gate early, they'll go through your belongings a little further than the normal inspection

Definitely not completely random in all circumstances. My gf gets checked every time we fly back back into the US and I never do. Probably random in his case though.

Yep.....I got swabbed down for explosives flying back from Amsterdam this summer.....it is what it is.....no sense trying to make sense....the flight was held 30 minuyesbfor me and the 7 or 8 others getting the twice over.....I guarantee none of us should have been heldbin suspicion.

Ya word was you got SSSS if you went through Istanbul.
But that's the only "non-random" reason I've seen. Otherwise who knows.
