Thinking of heading there in January and trying to figure out what I must catch

With family?
Ages?
Interests?
We went this week last year with a 9year old.
Did theater, ice skating, shopping, dining, and etc. went to the Empire State Building and a few other landmarks.
Didn't do the 911 museum due to the long line, nor Statue of Liberty.
I'm from there but wife and daughter had never been before.

Weather would be terrible, but the statue of liberty boat trip was awesome. Would also recommend the Empire State Building (make sure to get the audio tour).

Empire State Buidling as mentioned. Ground zero for sure, it's such a surreal experience. Central Park, so you can check out the rollerblading scene from big daddy. Wall St. was fun, tons of asians though. Times Square was interesting, I'm not sure how desirable it would be now with the SJWs setting up shop. I took the train in and I was in awe of how massive a city it is, and I've been to pretty much every large city in the US.

did the same with my wife a few years back
see who's filming live and try to get in the audience of a show. we did jimmy fallon and it was our favorite part. so cool.
Also did a musical on broadway and was surprised how much i liked it.
Just walk around a ton and take it all in. its a great city. so many good eats.
Something fun is the pizza tour. its a 2 hour tour that does like 4-5 stops at the famous pizzerias with samples and beer. its awesome

We just saw wicked and the lion king in the past and both were worth seeing for any age level.
Over the years of bringing people to NYC for their first time I have to say Empire State Building has been a must. The nbc studio tours was pretty cool and we walked around the SNL set.
I haven't done late night "night-life" in years but I did like the bar DNT (do not tell) a speakeasy that you enter through a fake phone booth.
Still love Mcsorleys ale house. They only have 2 type of beers, they serve you two of them at a time, and keep serving whether you want more or not. Gotta try the cheese plate with the rocket hot mustard. Dive bar, recently closed by health dept but a village staple.
Down town in little Italy the restaurants are ok, Ferrara's for desert is an icon must see. My personal fave pizza is Lombardis one of a very few still coal oven pizza.
By the park we enjoyed the plaza for afternoon tea. Don't be fooled by the title me and the wife finished 2 bottles of champagne there once. Reservations are a must. The carriage ride seems tacky, I've only did it once in more 300 times in the hood but it was better than most people think. Best way to see the park. There is a skating rink in the park on the west side and my wife loved doing that one night after dinner.
It's a big city plenty do if your there for a full year.

Not sure if they still offer it, but when we went about 7 years ago we were able to reserve a tour to go into the crown of the Statue of Liberty. My wife found out how to make a reservation on their website. When we arrived in the site, we were able to bypass the huge lines and get a tour in a very small group of about 10 people or so. Lots of spiral stairs to climb, but an experience my kids won't forget. I was surprised how few people were aware of the opportunity.

Belvedere Castle in Central Park is awesome if snow is on the ground. Go to the top and you'll have an amazing view for killer photos. Here is the castle itself, that landing near the top of that turret is where I am talking about.

If the weather is nice (which would be a miracle), do a bus tour. The wife and I took quite a few family and friends on the GrayLine tours (the double-decker buses) when she still had her apartment there. There's no other way to see as much of the city in such a short amount of time.
If you've never done one it goes like this: LINK
-You buy passes for certain sections and time lengths (typically 48 or 72 hours, although they sometimes have 24 hour passes as well).
-Get on the top of the bus. Period.
-If you didn't remember to bring ear buds, they will provide them for you but they are usually crappy.
-You can get on and off the bus on that route (or routes, depending on the package you get) at any stop at will. Example: The Downtown Tour takes you by the Empire State Building. If you want to go to the top just get off the bus a that stop, go up, have fun, then come back down and catch the next bus to continue your trip.
-Be sure to tip if the person doing the narration does a good job.
Other than bus tours...
Any play on Broadway is worth the time. I've seen Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark and Jersey Boys thus far, both were great. Check the TKTS office in Times Square to see what deals there are.
If an LSU game is on and you are near the Empire State Building, go across the street behind it to Legends. This is the LSU Alum bar, it's a great place to watch the football games if you are up there (they play all the band music at the appropriate times, play Calling Baton Rouge, etc).
The Staten Island Ferry is free and takes you by the Statue of Liberty (and will probably be balls-freezing-off cold in January).
The tree at Rockefeller Square should still be up at that time (think they take it down around the 7th). Even if it's not, go by and check out the ice skating rink.
Go to one of the Junior's locations and have some cheesecake.
American Museum of Natural History
And on and on...

We went last January and the weather wasn't as bad as it could be save for one day. Layer up, get a scarf, etc.
for ideas, all mentioned here are good. We loved Central Park and walking the Brooklyn bridge (ate at grimaldis under the bridge before we went). Chelsea market and Eataly are both really cool, and offer indoor entertainment.
I'm not a show type person, but we saw a show and it was great. If the weather is ok there is a rooftop bar at the Viceroy that looks over Central Park and is really cool
