Looking for travel board recommendations, suggestion, comments on our upcoming USVI trip at the end of the month. Going with wife and 3 kids (9 , 7 and 5)
Arrive Tuesday - spending day flying in, checking into our hotel on Nazareth Bay St Thomas. Spending the afternoon/night getting groceries, checking out the bars/ restaurants by red hook ferry area and hanging out by the hotel beach bar - Secret Harbour Beach Resort.
Wednesday planning a beach day at the hotel, looking for restaurant suggestions
Thursday hitting Coral World
Friday - Taking ferry to Cruz Bay St John, have rented a jeep for the day. Plan to drive the island loosely based on this
Saturday - have a boat reserved for our family to travel to BVI, have it from 830am - 5pm, so should be able to do alot of island hopping
Saturday - resort beach day
Monday- Open
Tuesday - travel back to new orleans
looking for restaurant tips, itinerary additions ,changes, suggestions of any other things to make our trip better. This is our first virgin island trip.

I'd do Virgin Gordon and Cooper Island on the BVI excursion. Bring cash to pay the BVI visitor fees and for a tip for the captain and mate.
If I were driving St John I'd go to a Trunk Bay, Francis Bay maybe mosey to the other side and do Skinny Legs for lunch and briefly check out Coral Bay (not a beach there). I wouldn't try to cram that many stops into one day.
I'd also spend less time on St Thomas and more time on St John.

VABuckeye, i was thinking on one of the beach resort days / open day taking the ferry to St John and just walking around, taxing to trunk or francis bay. i could probably rent a car for the day again if need be.
Any other suggestions on places to see? What about Drakes seat on st thomas, would that be worth taking a taxi to?
restaurant suggestions in the areas we are going to?
Thanks!!

Yeah pretty much any beach on St John you can't go wrong. Downtown is cool too couple bar/restaurants on the beach. We goin back end of August and I can't wait.

Mountain top on St Thomas has an incredible view and great banana daiquiris. It's tough but try to go on a day with fewer cruise ships in port. Those people are like a herd of elephants.

You can probably get to 2 or three islands in BVIs in that time frame if you cluster around the islands closest to St. Thomas, say Jost and the northwest coast of Tortola. Cane Garden Bay is a fantastic little beach area. On the whole Tortola probably the least "scenic" of the BVIs but the northwest side has some hidden gems. If you go further a sea, as VABuckeye has suggested, would just focus on Virgin Gorda and the Baths, with maybe a stop at the Rhone wreck on way out or in.
Agree with less time on St. Thomas. No chance you can check out on Thursday from St. Thomas resort and spend Thursday-Sunday on either St. John or Tortola? Are you at all proficient with a boat (power or sail)? I only ask because the real joy, I think of those islands is being able to explore and spend every night at a different port of call. Not a deal breaker by any means, but its a cool experience.

For our first visit with young kids I'm just going to stick to the current resort for the full length, take in the area and then on next trip stay on St. john or somewhere else in BVI.
I'm not proficient with a boat at all, so definitely don't feel comfortable doing that at this point. I was thinking for future trips to do a couples only visit staying on a captained boat with some other couples.
But, for this first trip looking to stay in St Thomas and then branch out.
Thanks for all the tips so far, great info. Keep them coming if you think of anything else.
Anyone have restaurant recs in St Thomas by the Red Hook dock particularly?

Totally understand. When traveling with kids, always best to K.I.S.S.
In future, if you go back (even with kids) a captained charter boat is a great move. Find another couple with similarly aged kids (or not) and you can have a pretty great trip for about what you would pay in hotels.

I'm going to second Cane Garden Bay. Great little hslf moon shaped beach with bars and restaurants around it.
I haven't eaten out by Red Hook. With no offense intended, we view St. Thomas a place to catch the ferry to St. John and the BVI.
Have a fabulous trip!

no offense taken, thanks for the tips.
this will be our first trip out of many in the future I believe, so we will try St Thomas this time and then eye directly to St John or BVI next time.
Thanks again all.

Just got back...trunk is nice for beach bumming, for snorkeling maho bay is sea turtle and rays galore. Water lemon for fish

I think it takes 3 hrs to get to bvi by by boat, so you eat up a lot of prescious time that could be used to explore something closer

It's not three hours away. There's also a fast ferry from St Thomas to Tortola.
Posted on 5/4/17 at 6:29 am to VABuckeye
Is Tortola worth checking out over a 2nd day in St John?
Posted on 5/4/17 at 8:18 am to Buck Dancer
Tortola is alright. There are some good beaches. I like Cane Garden Bay.
You might just want to spend two days exploring St John if you really want to get to know the island.

That is the plan currently. Rent the jeep one day on St John driving around and then go back another day and taxi to the best place we find. Are taxis to and from beaches readily available in St John? I could always rent a car the second day (if available) though.

You have time for two Painkillers while you wait for your luggage in Cyril King, the bar is beside the luggage chute.
There is a seaplane that will take you round trip to St. Croix for a day trip $175.00. Why? Ever been in a seaplane?
By far the best bar we found was La petite fenetre in French Town. Locals hangout with very friendly regulars.
The ferry to St. John is a WW II LST, which is cool.

By sail, maybe. By power, no way.

St Thomas struck me as the dirtier of the two islands. Once there, I wanted to spend less time there.
But once on St John, I never wanted to set foot on St Thomas ever again. Since your plan for St John includes The Westin (according to your link), why not try to get a reservation there instead of whatever you have planned on St Thomas?
A week on St John was barely enough, so good luck making it a day trip.
Kids may only like the beaches. But some of the trails that include ruins can make it fun for them if you frame it as something Indiana Jones would do. The one on Trunk Bay, and Annaberg Plantation are easy walks for kids. Another hidden gem that you are likely to have to yourself are the ruins of Catherineberg Estate. You drive up via a dirt road. No employees staff this location. Kids will like the freedom to explore it themselves.
For food, get a burger at Skinny Legs on St John. It has a very beachy dive bar atmosphere.
Also on St John, Monday night is all you can eat lobster night at Aqua Bistro. It's in Coral Bay. I put down 4 for $50.
Take the kids to Blackbeard's Castle on St Thomas. Other than that, I have no other St Thomas recommendations.
