Just booked a family trip to USVI for me, wife and 3 kids (9 year old girl, 7 year old girl and 5 year old boy).

Staying at Secret Harbor USVI.

Looking for suggestions of what to do besides sitting on the beach.

Already emailed palm tree charters and Lion in da sun charters.

Any other suggestions?

Take the boat to St John's and the BVIs. St John's is about 15-20 minutes while BVIs are about an hour and a half. It's worth it, though. Be careful not to go down into some of the non touristy areas. Most of the USVIs are giant ghettos outside of the hot spots.

any particular spots to hit, I emailed a charter place (palm tree charters) and his rec was -

Here is a popular itinerary we do: (BVI Customs fees apply & passports required)
A typical day would consist of meeting at Joe’s Rum Hut at 8:30am. We would take a boat tour of the beautiful north shore beaches of St. John. Then we would cross over to the BVIs and clear customs (we handle all of this for you). Then we are off to Norman Island for some world class snorkeling followed by lunch at the Pirate's Bight (beautiful beach side restaurant) or at the Willy T's (Floating restaurant/Bar). Maybe, if we have time, we would stop by Sandy Spit on our way to White Bay on Jost Van Dyke (home of the Soggy Dollar Bar) where we would finish out our day. Boarding the boat back to St. John around 3:30. Then we check in at customs in St. John, refuel the boat, and we drop you off back at Joe’s Rum Hut around 4:30 or so. If you want more snorkeling then we will do more. If you want less beach bars, then we will do less. If you have certain places you would like to include let us know. Ultimately you choose the cruise!

Snorkel in Trunk Bay in St. John. Great shopping in St. Thomas.

A few things.

Don't be that guy that brings kids to the Willie T. A lot of us go there because it's a place adults can cut loose and be adults. It's the raunchiest bar I've ever been to and kids put a damper on that.

Talk to Steve at RockHoppin. We've done many excursions with him and Marty and have had a blast every time. They have set itineraries or you can customize one.

Here's what I'd do with the kids on a boat for a day. Go to Virgin Gorda and The Baths. The kids will have a blast exporing there in and around the rock formations.

Snorkel at The Aquarium on Norman Island if you have time. I've never seen as many varieties of sea life in one place and I've snorkeled all over the Caribbean and in the South Pacific.

You can do lunch at Cooper Island. It's much more family friendly than the Willie T.

White Bay and Great Harbor are both nice stops on Jost.

All of the above is more than you can do in one day so you'll have to pick and choose. You could also go out to Anegada but that's a haul from St. John and may not leave much time for other stops.

On St. John you can rent a dinghy by the half or whole day. I'd get a center console. Do not rent from Noah's Little Arks. Sadly they've run their business into the ground and I don't recommend them as their boats are becoming unseaworthy. It's a shame as I'm friends with the owners and wish I could recommend them.

Snorkeling on Trunk Bay as recommended already is a must. You can also go over to the other side of the island and have lunch at Skinny Legs and explore that side.

Great info, VABuckeye!

We're planning a USVI trip sometime in the next year.

How do you know so much about the islands and specific people? Did you live there for a time or do you do business there?

Just curious. Regardless, great info.

We visit the Caribbean several times a year and have been to St. John many times. A buddy of mine has a condo there and we've gotten to know a lot of the islanders through him.

ETA: Right now we have 9 days booked on Isla Mujeres in February and 8 day on Jost Van Dyke at the end of May. We'll probably come up with another trip to the islands next fall. It's an area where I can completely relax. Even though I do work while I'm there it's not at the frantic pace that it is up here so my stress level goes way down.

RE: Knowing specific people. My family and friends laugh at me about this. I don't believe in staying at resorts. We rent a house and a car and explore and I'm not shy about talking with people and making friends. However, it's on another level on St. John as we've been there so many times.

I helped a close friend build his vacation home on Isla Mujeres. VERY underrated but incredibly cheap island.

We love Isla Mujeres and knows some of the locals there. The underwater concrete sculptures are amazing!

Same with my wife and I. For example, we spent 9 days on Maui - 7 in Lahaina and 2 in Hana. Each time we stayed in a private home but we were very specific about the home we chose. Absolutely the right way to do it!

In Hana, we rented a home called The Sunrise House. It's a Japanese style home. All the walls slide open to bring the inside out. The entire house was surrounded by a great screened in deck which allowed hundreds of geckos to climb and chirp in the evenings.

We opened all the walls and literally felt like we were sleeping outside on our comfy bed. It was perfect, especially when it rained early each morning.

I find it better to make our own drinks, cook or grill our own food, and retain a high level of intimate privacy.

This right here. We have been a few times and have gone the resort route only once, and not looking back.

A more off the beaten path snorkel trip is a short hike to Waterlemon Cay on St. John. It's a short hike on a trail called Leinster Bay Trail along the shore and you can swing by Annaberg Planation ruins on the way there or back. The snorkeling is fantastic in Waterlemon Bay near the end of the trail.
