Traveling parents...tell me about flying with my kid.

My daughter is a pretty good traveler when we aren't going far (like to the in-laws about 2.5 hours away).
I am going to be flying with her (by myself) in July. She will be about 7.5 months old. My parents are driving, I just have not enough vaca time and it's a long drive to take with her. They can take the big stuff like a pack & play, our luggage, etc.
I booked on United. We do have a layover in Houston (only 50m there, 2 hrs on the way back). It's going to be one of those small planes with the one seat on the left side. I chose to sit on that side so at least she won't be able to grab at a passenger next to us.
Any tips? Best things to keep her occupied? (Flights are about 1-2 hours.) Best ways to keep other passengers from hating me? I know they'll gate check a stroller, but will they also gate check a car seat that clicks into the stroller?

They wil gate check the carrier as well. When our twins were 6 months old we flew with them to Disney. From what I recall it wasn't that bad, I think it's good to give them a pacifier bc it will help with ear pressure. I'm not sure what you have introduced her to, but I had my phone on the ready with an app that showed animals and the sounds they make. Simple...yes, but it usually would quell any fussy outbursts. Also, try getting her to sleep on the plane, probably the easiest solution.

First flight with my kid was at 2 months and we checked stroller and car seat, this was 10 years ago. We did not have to buy a ticket, she sat in our laps. She did fine, wined a little when landing but that was about it. Make sure you have bottles ready and flight attendants will warm it.

This right here will definitely save me some headache. I was going to have to figure out a car seat for myself if my parents took ours since they'll be gone longer than me. But they can just keep the base if I can gate check this. Thanks.

Check with the airline on what type of paperwork you need, likely only birth certificate.

Consider calling united and making sure the row you are in has an extra oxygen mask. I think some of those small planes only have extra masks in certain rows. If you don't call, they will make sure to reseat you in an appropriate row anyway.
Try to feed your kid when taking off. Provides a distraction and the engine sound may help her fall asleep as well. Same with landing. Sucking on a bottle will help with ear pressure.
Lastly, don't worry about other passengers. They were all babies once.

Here's something I learned about airlines: If there's a screaming kid sitting next to you, airlines won't let you change to a different seat if it's your kid.....

When my son was younger, we would try and schedule flights around his schedule to eat/nap. Would feed him while the plane is boarding and he would usually fall asleep right after. I know they aren't required to have their own seat but I would highly recommend it. An hour flight isn't long but the added time of holding them while boarding, taxiing, waiting to get off the plane all adds up. The baby may not move around but you have to think about your own comfort as well in such a confined space, especially with no one to help you out. Bring lots of snacks for her.
