You who book trip packages from agents, do you get any kind of travel insurance? What kind.

I typically book my trips, about 2-3 per year, from a friend who works for Apple. We have been buying trip insurance for our trips. For a typical trip of $4000-$5000, we have been paying about $125 each.

We are booking through a differnt method this year and they are offering Travel Guard. Our trip is a long one this year, 20 days, and the cost is much higher but Travel Guard is offering total coverage for $179.

Anyone have any experience with Travel Guard?

Thanks

Heading overseas for the first time this May for 8 days.

What's a recommended travel insurance place? I haven't a clue where to start looking or know who's reputable.

Another thing to also consider is health coverage if you go overseas. Your health insurance usually will not cover you in another country. If you are planning to do any activities where you could potentially get hurt...not a bad idea to get trip insurance that offers that kind of coverage as well.

When I went to Costa Rica our trip insurance for both of us for 10 days was like $120. Covered the usual trip cancellation, etc....but also gave us full medical coverage if we got hurt in CR(with us going ziplining, white water rafting, rappelling...I wanted us to have the coverage in case we injured ourselves). Even would cover us being emergently transported back to the U.S. if we were seriously hurt and needed better health care than what was offered in some CR hospital. Also would cover emergency evacuation if a natural disaster happened.

Keep in mind this insurance only covers cancellation due to illness, death, unemployment, inclement weather, IRROPs. It does not cover you if your plans change.

Keeping that in mind, if you are travelling so much and purchasing trip insurance around $180 each time, consider getting a premium travel credit card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, AmEx Plat or Citi Prestige. Any trip paid for by these cards are fully covered for Trip Cancellation (Again, see above), plus a few other things such as baggage delay/loss etc. After the annual fee ($450 each) and travel credit, each only costs $150-$250 to keep year after year and offers tons of benefits. So you are coming out way on top.

For trip health insurance, I use insuremytrip every time. Highly recommended. inuremytrip is just a aggregator/agent. The underwriter is usually Allianz or AIG or the like. This by itself only costs about $10 a week on average.

Good information to know, as I use the chase sapphire reserve right now for trip insurance. But I had not considered additional medical insurance

This is the kind of insurance I was inquiring about. I'm not so worried about cancellation or anything. But for medical issues, medical evacuation..etc. I don't know who is reputable or a good place to look for this.

You also need to think about what is not actually refundable or changeable? Airfare is rarely a 100% loss, and its only the Airline fees not the taxes and expenses which are always 100% returned upon cancelation. I rarely make a hotel reservation that is not cancelable, I do some airbnbs and what not but that's for big trips.

Furthermore, as said above look at what you can actually use your insurance for. I have heard plenty of horror stories from dealing with travel insurance companies, but I have also heard some good stories also. You certainly can't purchase travel insurance and expect it to cover a cancelation no matter what, for instance for deaths it usually only covers a certain level of family members. Like probably not your nephew or something.

The health insurance is not a bad idea, but also don't forget that medical care is a lot cheaper in most places outside of the states.
