I broke my ankle so had to cancel the Keys in May.

Looking at 2018 for trip ideas.

Keys might still be the answer.

Also I might taking diving classes.

Any advice or thoughts appreciated

We snorkeled a spot on Norman Island, BVI called the aquarium. I've never seen so many species in one trip. There's also a fantastic cove on St. John for turtles. Buck Island which is off the coast of St. Croix has an underwater national park that's laid out for snorkeling. There are statues underwater off the coast of Cancun. I know the diving is fantastic off of Roatan. We found the snorkeling to be very good there as well.

Sounds like you are very likely to see. I think I have to do it. Sounds awesome.

Seeing sailfish ball bait would be outstanding seems like it would be hard to find them.

My only real experience was the keys and I loved it.
Here's a quick long story.

I went with a friend who had lived there for the summer. He's big into spear fishing, does it everyday and can hold his breathe for like 4 mins

We he takes me to some reef on the last day so I can get some cool shots with my GoPro.
We are in the water for 15 mins and my GoPro is acting up and I thought about fixing it so I return to the boat and throw in there. Well as soon as I find him again we start swimming around some coral and see a 6 ft reef shark, it starts swimming towards us. And this being my first experience I'm freaking out. Well my friend starts swimming straight at it, so I follow suite and then the shark just turns and leaves. I have to surface for air, I come back down to find him at the bottom, feet sticking out from the coral. As I approach I see that he's grabbed onto a nurse shark and is basically surfing with it.

Dude is a badass and I didn't get any of that on my GoPro

Of the spots we've snorkeled, here are my top 5...and these are very close to one another and are ranked on snorkel experience only, not the overall trip (food, drinks, resort, etc.)

1. Cozumel, Mexico
2. Ambergris Caye, Belize
3. Negril, Jamaica
4. Key West, FL
5. Isla Holbox, Mexico

We have not been to the BVI or Cayman Islands, but have heard snorkeling is pretty awesome at both.

Wherever you go, report back with pics + review and I will add to the sticky.

I snorkeled at a sardine run in the Philippines last year. It was really eerie but a memorable experience. This article is about diving but has some pictures. I was content just floating on top of the all that.

Anahola Bay (NE corner of Kauai). Awesome reef for about 300 yards before it gets deep and the breakers show up. All of the beautiful aquarium fish like the humahuma are there for your viewing.

Wouldn't consider myself a "snorkeler" but I really enjoyed snorkeling in St. Lucia. The water is crystal clear and the saline levels are extremely low to the point where you can open your eyes underwater (sans goggles) and it doesn't cause irritation.

Yes. Them, hummas, Threadfin Butterfly, Moorish Idol, etc. It's a truly great place to snorkel.

And there are some nice rocks around to pick opihi. They're like miniature abalone but much tastier. Not sure how legal it was but we filled our pockets and then treated them like char grilled oysters.

The third largest barrier reef is off the coast of Andros, Bahamas. Fantastic snorkeling and diving.

Fantastic get away at Small Hope Bay Lodge. - if you'd like to try diving, they have a great discover scuba program where they pair you wig a dive master and let you start shallow dives. The place is truly an gem off the beaten path. Don't go there for big resort style vacation.

Here a top-10 type travel article about it. Remote carribean hotels worth the journey.

A little rough on the belly when the tide was low.

But you're find little holes maybe 20' in diameter and 15' deep. You could plug your tube and dive down along the walls. Pretty awesome.
