Train from Paris to London

Going to Paris next week, planning on doing a day trip to London and return the same day... the Eurostar is $350 where as to fly it is around $140 round trip. Am I missing something? I've never been on a train are the views worth me paying double, or should I just fly.

That's crazy that the train is that much more expensive. I did it last year from Lyon to London and back and I think it was 140ish euros round trip. The train drops off and picks up in the city which is nice, and the airport is farther out of the city, but for that difference I'd fly.

Fly. The train puts you directly into central London and flying will mean a 45 minute or so uber/cab into the city......and that wont be cheap...depending on what airport you fly into....$70 maybe.....You can train/tube it into the city in about an hour for $8 each person. And the check-in/security for the train is easier than Charles Degaulle for sure....So its not as clear cut as to whether to fly or train.

This alone would be enough for me to take the train.

I have taken the Chunnel Train and thought it was great. It gets you from downtown Paris to downtown London in about 3 hours. When considering cost and time you must factor in transportation to and from the airport. I would much rather take the train.

Train for me. That fare seems too high, though: check out The Man in Seat 61's Eurostar tips: LINK

Take the train. It's a nice little ride with some good views and dumps you right into the middle of the City.
If you do fly, you might try Orly airport as an alternative to CDG. I flew out of it for the first time last summer and loved it. Great airport.

The reason the train price is so high is because you did not purchase far enough in advance. 90 days out it was only $401 for my family of 4 in November. The prices get progressively more expensive 90/60/30 days out. Also check the available times. That price is really expensive.

Make sure you aren't looking at a first class ticket.

It doesn't look like anyone addressed your question on views. There are very few 'views' on the train. Most of it is underground/water.
I agree that $350 sounds too steep. I also agree that the convenience of taking the train is generally worth it.

The advantage to the train is that you leave from central London and arrive in central Paris. Going to and from the airports in both of those cities is, in my opinion, a pain in the arse, especially if you're flying out of one of the secondary London airports (Luton, Stansted, City). Flying out of those airports is where you'll find the cheapest flights, but there's a reason for that. I think if you're going for a day, you're much better off taking the train as it will give you more time in Paris.

Plus, train schedules in London, while not perfect, seem to be a little more reliable than airlines, and a heck of lot more reliable than the black cabs (see strikes, traffic, construction, etc.) Having been delayed at Heathrow and caught in a cabbie strike on the way from the airport, you could eliminate a lot of risk by just taking the train.

The views on the French side and the approach into London are pretty cool.

The train is way more relaxing. No stress of security; much quieter; room to walk around; etc. After a long day in Paris, you don't want the hassle of taking a cab or train all the way out to CDG just to deal with that nightmare of an airport hoping to catch your plane. Guarantee you sleep on the train back to London. EurostAr is so smooth you won't even realize you have left the station til you look out the window.
Train is a no brainer.
And you don't need advance tickets if you are worried about cost. Europeans traveling economy buy walkup tickets.

I disagree about eurostar security. We almost missed the damn train because of the line at st.pancras this past November. The French customs agent couldn't go any slower if he wanted to. I would get to the station an hour and a half in advance. Going back this november again and will not risk it.
Gare de Nord station in Paris is about 10 min or less by cab to Notre Dame.
The views of the security around the chunnel entrance are crazy. 3 fences with barbed wire.

What time of day was your trip?
At least when I did the 7am trip, security was very easy at St. Pancras.

Just took the train from London into Paris today, and even with added security, it was so much more enjoyable than flying. Easy to use the subways in both places, and more comfortable in general. It would be a no brainer for me.

I paid only 95 RT for my train ride and that was only with a month in advance. It's still a good service and outside of Gare Du Nord in Paris being hotter than hell, I really enjoyed EuroStar

Thats interesting... a couple of weeks ago we took TGV out of Gare Montparnasse and I was amazed at the lack of security...
