Things to do in San Diego

Have a business trip there in a couple weeks and boss said to bring the wife and kiddo to do Seaworld. But I'm in training for 3 days. Not sure what they can do. Are there any cool and safe areas with things to do/see in walking distance of a hotel?

Where are you staying? Or is that what you're asking for? Why keep them in the hotel? If wife can drive, have her do stuff like going up to Carlsbad to the flower fields, or she can take them to the beaches. There is tons of things to do with in an hour drive. Malls too.

Send wife and kid to La Jolla. La Valencia hotel is a good starting point. Lots of good shopping, eating and walking in that area.
Also they can walk down Pacific Beach boardwalk along the ocean.

Why are they restricted to walking distance from the hotel? A cab or Uber will take them anywhere they want to go....and San Diego has easily the best zoo in the nation. It is a beautifully designed place, large enough to spend an entire day wandering around; it has a chairlift, bus around the grounds, and three or four shops and more than half a dozen places to eat. Even ppl who aren't into animals can appreciate the botanical aspects of the zoo, it is very lushly planted.
Head to see the sun drop into the Pacific at Sunset Cliffs, walk around the Saturday farmer's market in LIttle Italy, go to the Natural History Museum or ride on the mini railroad in Balboa Park, etc.
It's a great town with great weather...plenty of things to do.

Well my son will need a car seat which is why I wondered about walking distance. I completely forgot about the zoo.

San Diego Zoo > SeaWorld and it isn't close imho.

Legoland is close by as well. Never been but my nephew LOVES that place.

If you are bringing the kids, definitely recommend the San Diego Zoo - you will not be disappointed.
LEGOLAND is ok but it really is for younger kids.
LEGOLAND and SeaWorld are not that crowded in California.

Looks like the wife and kid will do Legoland one day on their own. And I'll have one day with them. Is the consensus that if we can only do one, it should be the zoo?

San Diego Zoo is one of the best zoos in the nation.
You should see the zoo. Just be prepared....it is a LOT of walking (place is massive) and there are many areas on huge inclines. Wear some suitable shoes. It's been many years since I went but we did a double decker type bus ride around the zoo first. That way we could see stuff and then decide what areas we wanted to walk back to. Not sure if they still do that.

They do but alot of the zoo is under construction. Was there back in March.
Also to OP, I love Coronado.

I never went to Lego Land California when I was stationed there, but I will say I enjoyed Lego Land Florida more than Disney.
SeaWorld SD can get crowded, especially as a new summer is here. Lots of military get another free annual trip, and tourists.
And if OP is worried about a car seat, then rent one.

Just an update.
Wife and kid ended up not coming with me. But after my first visit, I will absolutely be bring them back. What a gorgeous place.
Our hotel was right on the beach (well across the street). Hilton Garden Inn Carlsbad. It was pretty standard as far as the room went but the grounds were gorgeous.
Not at all what I expected from the beach. 40' cliff to climb down and then covered in stones. Still amazing. It was what's called June Gloom while we were there, so unfortunately, saw very little sun. Lots of surfers all times of the day.
Carlsbad the city was just beautiful. Went up to Carlsbad village which was very cool.
Drove down Friday night to La Jolla. Took 101 instead of the interstate, which I would highly recommend. Absolutely awesome drive. Stopped to take a pic a Torrey Pines for my golf-obsessed brother in law. Drove through UCSD campus and then walked around La Jolla a bit. Got within 15-20 feet of some stinky arse sea lions. Saw 3 crazy arse dudes swimming through La Jolla cove around the sea lions. I don't know why they thought that was a good idea, you couldn't pay me to jump in that white shark infested water for 10 seconds much less swim about a mile across it.
On the way back stopped in Encinitas and ate at the Fish House. Had an ahi poke bowl which was excellent.
I will be going back several times a year with the new job, and doing most of the stuff recommended in this thread. Thanks guys.
