Not going in the near future, but has anyone been to the elephant sanctuaries? Played with a baby elephant? What are the best places to go?

I haven't been either, but I think I'm making the trip in December and going to the full moon party, then go visit a friend in Australia for a few days.

Haven't been to elephant places in Thailand but most animal welfare friendly seem to be around Chang Mai.

DoUrden is probably the guy you are referring to, he literally just got back a few weeks ago and posted some awesome pics from both Thailand and Cambodia. I went a while back and recently have simply been collecting the reviews from those that have taken the time to post (for all destinations). We've been lucky to have a few contributions, actually.

I didn't go to Chang Mai but talked to some that did while in Phuket, and that is the place to go for the elephant experience. It was advised that I skip Bangkok and I would agree for the most part, it was good for a couple of days and to get some suits made but other than that it's big, dirty, smelly, and BUSY. Phuket wasn't anything special (I was also advised against going there.) The hotel was phenomenal but the main tours are the islands like Phi Phi which you can get to from a lot of other places. Phuket is very big in a long kinda way so not much inland is close.

I would recommend at least a couple of day in Siem Reap in Cambodia, I got a great hotel and round trip flight from Bankok for a total of $250. I can put you in touch with a guide and driver to do the temple tours. I wish I had spent more time in Cambodia and am looking at going back sometime in the future. If you read my reviews linked above it will give you a lot of info but if you have any other questions just ask and I will do my best to answer.

The video and pic in my Cambodia review were just outside of Angkor Wat, but I did not ride them. It's hot as hell, it was 100 when I got back to the hotel.

The the elephant thing in Chang Mai sounded cool, teams were tasked with washing an elephant in a race, of course after it was over the elephants proceeded to fling mud all over themselves. If I go back I will definitely make it to Chang Mai.

Ya me too. It was Chang Mai or Siem Reap so I went with the latter, but next time we'd definitely do Chang Mai.

My wife liked Bangkok a lot. For us, after being to a few Indian cities, Bangkok isn't that loud, or dirty, or any of those things, and seems really tame

You are right. Most of these trained animals are actually kept under really harsh conditions. Asia in general does not treat animals as well as they are treated in the West. It sucks but when you have people living in bad conditions themselves, animals suffer a lot more.

In Thailand there was this zoo where you could get a picture with a tiger. Tourists were all gung ho about that. They don't realize that the tiger has been declawed and detoothed and gotten beat up so much to get to that point..

Sad but true.

Thailand is super touristy especially in the south. GO to Chiang Mai. That's about it.

Vietnam is 10x better

I lived in Phuket for 6 months. I LOVED Chang Mai. We went and did zip lines through the tall trees and rode elephants through the forests. It's so much more relaxed compared to Phuket and better priced.

We also went to Chang Rai (Golden Triangle) and stayed here Anantara Golden Triangle It's not cheap but we had a hookup. It's an elephant camp and we even sponsored the mahout's for a year with a donation. It was awesome and you can completely immerse your self with elephants and not have many people competing for time with them.

Absolutely loved Siem Reap as well. We stayed right down the street from Angkor Wat and booked a tuk tuk for $20 through the hotel to drive us all around the temples for the whole day and then I just kept using him for the next few days we were there. I want to go back there sometime for sure. We did not like Phnom Penh nearly as much as it was just so gloomy and then of course going to the Killing Fields went hand in hand with the overcast and rain.

States of Udaipur, Jaipur, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, backwaters of Kerala, Kashmir (Dal lake, Ladakh), Agra (Taj Mahal) then if you have more time - you could tack on Nepal and Everest base camp.

Tons, especially if you want to see old architecture. The Mughals built so much crap it would take a life time to see it all. Forts? Jesus there is a huge damn fort wherever you go. You might honestly get tired of them, but they are all massive (This pic is mine)

Those are the ones we did. Some stuff pulled off internet, this post would be too huge if I put every thing we even did, let alone what is available. entirely

Qutb Minar (Delhi)

Humayun's Tomb (Delhi)

Chand Baori Stepwell:

Then you got stuff like Varanasi, the holiest city in Hinduism where the cremations and aarti ceremonies are done along the Ganges.

And if all that gets to be a bit overwhelming, head to the beaches of Goa or the backwaters of Kerala, or the Hill stations as mentioned.

You are either going to hate India or be fascinated by it. I'm the latter.
