Thinking of getting out of town for thanksgiving, maybe San Diego or Charleston (from Houston). Will there be a sweet spot (timing wise) for airfares that opens up? Or are we screwed no matter when we try and book? Unfortunately work schedules dictate we wouldn't be able to leave until Wednesday and we'd have to come back Sunday. I'm aware that lessens any chance of a deal. Thanks in advance.

Start looking now, we're about 4 months out. Usually the sweet spot is 1-3 months, unfortunately because you have to come back the sunday after thanksgiving it's going to be $$$$. The one-way on wednesday may not be bad (I'm seeing $183 for a one-way IAH-CHS on American or Delta LINK or $219 for a one-way IAH-SAN nonstop LINK ).

Returning on that sunday the cheapest one-way is $412 on Delta from Charleston or $407 on United from San Diego.

You may want to consider other destinations, start browsing now on google flights and just look at the map for interesting cheap places. Vancouver is $382 ($433 for nonstops on United) so maybe some place like that? LINK

I've been playing around on it the last 15 minutes or so. 4 day or 5 day trips to Dublin are in the 700s. Hmmm...

Could probably swing a Monday return.

I saw dublin but didn't know if you had the time to go that far. Is international also an option? South America isn't far from Houston, maybe Peru or Colombia?

Trinidad and Tobago is $507 if you want tropical? Flight leaves wed afternoon, returns 1am monday morning gets to IAH at 5:25am. Just in time for work LINK

I'd only consider Europe for a great deal, and typically only nonstop, which for IAH only includes LHR, CDG, FRA, AMS. But DUB is far cheaper than the rest of those and not a terrible layover... Lima is the only deal in SA. I'd have a much easier time convincing the wife on Ireland.

Edit: Medellin is cheap. That would really take some convincing though.

So if you have several places in mind now, you should set up some trackers to track the prices. Right under where it says "Outbound flight" there's a spot that says track prices, switch this to on. Google flights will automatically email you if the prices go up or down and since we're just outside of the prime booking time, I think it'd be pretty useful instead of looking everyday at the map (unless you're like me). You can set them up for Houston - Charleston, San Diego, Dublin, etc. for both Wed Nov 22- Sun Nov 26 and Wed Nov 22 - Mon Nov 27th. This way you can know if anything shows up cheap to any of these places without doing the work

ETA: Mexico city is even cheaper at $276 LINK

We've gone to Europe the past few years during Thanksgiving and done really well on flights. We booked sometime around now.

I usually find the cheapest fares are for leaving the day before or on Thanksgiving day.

Europe over Thanksgiving is a favorite thing of mine. If you're willing to fly Thanksgiving day, you can score some great deals.

Is it Sunday of Thanksgiving week that causes prices to go up? Looking at going to San Juan from the Monday or Tuesday, but have to come back on the Sunday. The lowest my tracker has given me is $600, which is insanely high.

Oh yeah, if you look for saturday or monday the prices are at least $100 cheaper usually. I've found some good deals coming back on that saturday afternoon/evening

If anything like last year the week or two before Thanksgiving flights are dirt cheap. I was able to book a few flights for this summer for cheap

I'll check it out, but it would have to be late in the afternoon on Saturday.

Yeah it's a huge difference. I'm pretty much set on coming back Monday. The price graph function on Google is awesome.
