Any cabins nearby? What other highways to ride? Thinking 3 days in the area with dad.

Not sure if any cabins nearby, we stayed in Gatlinburg. There is a motel @ Deal's Gap.

Did it twice on a gold wing, we stayed at the
Ironnhorse Lodging and campgrounds in the cabins. we were a group of about 10 riders. Be careful on the Dragon it can and will bite you

I don't do motorcycles, but the Cherohala Skyway from Tellico Plains, TN to Robbinsville, NC is nearby and also a really nice drive. Plenty of cabins around Robbinsville, which is a good jumping off spot for both drives. It's a neat, but pretty remote, area.

There is a real pretty waterfall about 5-10 miles directly off of Cherohala, nice picture taking place

Have you ever done the Arkansas Dragon and the Pig Trail? They are both bad arse driving roads. Don't have anything to add for Tail of The Dragon but you have some great roads close to home.

You should make it a weekend trip. When I was there I also went to Mt. Magazine and Mt. Nebo. It was a great weekend for not very much money.

I live less than an hour away and go several times a year. There is a motel at Deals Gap but if you want something nicer I recommend staying in Fontana Village which is about 10 minutes away. Almost all the backroads around the Tail are great drives. If you want more well known drives I recommend Cherohala and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Depending on what type of bike you own and if you want a little bit of adventure then you can take the Parsons Branch Road which is an 8 mile long gravel and dirt road that starts in Cades Cove and comes out in the middle of the Dragon. Lastly, if you want to go fast and at your own pace then you better go during the week, because on the weekend you will get stuck behind slow riders and traffic going 15mph the whole way and it is no fun at all.

you'll want to avoid it June 18 when probably 3-400 cyclists will be going up it with lots of rolling roadblocks by motorcycle support

i felt this in my legs for a few days after doing it! i stupidly tried for a top 10 overall time on the cherohala climb and burned myself out pretty bad by the time i reached the summit.
