Mariposa is good stuff. Hike some of the easier hikes. Devil's Bridge is awesome. Just ride around and enjoy the unique sites. Suck it up and drive to the Grand Canyon. That's one big arse hole.

Rent a Rubicon for 24 hours from Barlowe's Jeep Rentals and hit the trails.

Hike to chicken point early in the morning before the jeeps get out and ruin the atmosphere.
For casual and basic lunch, pizza Picasso is decent chain like food.
Jerome is an hour away and is an old mining town that is kind of neat if you are into that. Also pass from tons of Indian relics around the city if into that.
Red Rock crossing is worth a visit for a quintessential view of Cathedral Rock.
West Fork hike up near slide park is half treed half red rock and pretty cool.
Oak creek brewery is tasty and coffee pot diner is a decent bfast joint.
Been a handful of times, one of my favorites places to visit (Sedona)

Off roaring is a must and if you don't went a jeep they have pink jeep tours. I would make my way up 45 minutes to flagstaff. Amazing town. Go to snowbowl and take the lift ride. So pretty

I did the Pink Jeep tour a few years back and that was nice. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly.
I wanted to rent and atv and try a trip on my own the last time I went, but it didn't materialize. That is also an option.

Just spent a few days there in March... quickly became one of my favorite spots to visit.
My wife isn't a huge hiker, but I managed to get her to Devils Bridge, Cathedral Rock, and a few others. Highly recommend Devils Bridge, the photo at the end makes it all worth while.
For a scenic drive, hop on highway 89A and take it all the way to Flagstaff. When we went, there was still snow all over the place when we got into the mountains of Flagstaff.
Wood-fired pizza on the main street is a great lunch spot.

Thinking about making a quick trip to Sedona in early August? Is the heat unbearable at this time? Should i be looking elsewhere?

Is high of anywhere from 80s to upper 90s unbearable to you?
Sedona is usually a good 10-15 degrees cooler than PHX metro area. I've gone to Sedona several times during the summer and still enjoyed it. Just have to plan when you do your outdoor activities.
Or...go to Flagstaff instead to truly escape the heat. Remember...Flag is not far from Sedona at all (like 40-45 minutes away). Highs usually in the upper 70s in the summertime with lows in the 50s at night. We've camped there during the summer and needed light jackets when it got dark.
