I am looking at taking a golf trip to Scotland and possibly Ireland next year. For the ones who have done this already, did you book everything yourself or go through a package/tour deal? Recommendations on package/tour companies as well as golf itineraries are welcome.

I have some really good friends who live in Northern Ireland... but I'm fairly certain they don't play golf.

I'd take a lot of extra time to read through website reviews and see what the locals think. There are some amazing locations, golf or otherwise, in Scotland and Ireland, but if you just go in blind you will spend a ton of money and have a miserable time.

You might laugh, but the last time we went to Destin we bothered to ask the locals where the best seafood place in town was... and they all said Red Lobster. And they were right. Find out from the people that live there or have gone there what is and is not, a good place.

Lol, this is laughably wrong. I'm local, no one i've ever met would say that. No one from actual Destin actually goes to Red Lobster as its in Ft Walton Beach.

As to the OP I've never golfed there, should be an amazing trip.

My cousin makes this trip almost annually and I joined him a few years back. He planned everything out and booked all courses and lodging on his own instead of doing a package. It worked out great, but it's definitely an expensive trip. each round at the historic courses is probably $200+, not including caddy fees and tips.

We flew into Edinburgh and went to play Carnoustie on our way to St. Andrew's.

We stayed in St. Andrew's for two nights I think. Played 2 rounds at Kingsbarnes, which was an immaculate newer course. We entered the lottery for the Old Course but didn't get accepted until we left the town so we drove back. It was well worth it.

We then drove to Turnberry and played the Turnberry Alisa course. Incredible. Stayed at the hotel on site /across the street.

Next day drove to play at Royal Troon. Changed clothes in the parking lot (pants required) like the silly Americans we are.

Then drove back to Edinburgh to take in a few days of the city and played at a nearby course called North Berwick. It's one of the oldest golf courses in the world and was such a fun experience. Would highly recommend it up there with the famous courses.

I have no complaints about the above itinerary except it seemed like a lot of driving. Would recommend each of the courses I played. If I had to drop one course, it would be carnoustie.
