Russian tourist Visa question
I am trying to put together a trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg but the visa process is very confusing, you need a letter invitation, and all sorts of other stuff. Can anyone shed some light on the best way to get a tourist visa?

quote:

The following documents should be submitted in order to obtain a visa according to its category:
1. Completed visa application signed by the Applicant only. Incomplete visa application forms shall not be processed.
Application available online at http://visa.kdmid.ru
All questions in the application form should be answered. If a question is not applicable to the applicant, he should put “N/A”.
Each application form must be signed by the visa applicant personally.
2. Valid national passport (original only and it should have at least two clear visa pages). It must be valid no less than six months after the visa expiration date. Holders of travel documents such us: Permit to Re-Enter the United States of America, Travel Document, etc. must submit valid Permanent Resident Card (an original and a copy).
3. One picture of an applicant. Russian visa photo specifications.
4. Money Order or Certified Bank Check made out to the Russian Consulate for visa processing. Please note that we do not accept cash, credit or debit cards, personal or company checks.
5. Invitation to Russia from a host person or organisation.

A good way to get a letter of invitation is from a tour agency that you book your trip through or you will need a friend that lives there to write a letter for you.

Think I'm going this summer to visit a friend living in St. Petersburg. He has advised it is best and cheaper to get a multi entry visa.

You can get an invitation letter from your hotel also.

It's a catch 22, I don't want to book the hotel until I know I can get the visa and get it in time.

It sure is. You have to book your flight before you apply also. I went through it a while back. They told me it would take two weeks to get my visa so we booked a flight 30 days out. When I went to fill out the visa application online they said it would now take up to six weeks to get the visa due to high demand. Ended up canceling the trip.
Also, iirc, you have to submit the visa app to the Russian consulate in person, either DC or Houston depending on your location, or pay an agency to act as your proxy.

ETA. Yep, gotta submit app in person

I am seriously considering scrapping the Russia trip this year and going to Egypt instead because of this.

You don't have to apply in person. I applied through a company online and sent the passport in the mail. Getting the visa back took like two weeks. I wouldn't apply a month before, but with a little pre planning, it doesn't take long. Any hotel will sponsor your visa

I'm curious on what your itinerary looks like for Russia. Besides being under constant FSB surveillance what other issues are people coming across?

I'm headed to Moscow tomorrow for work, which will be the 5th time since last July. I did the multi-year through g3visas.com. It's a bit pricey but they handled every aspect and it was seemless. I had an invite letter from a work contact, but G3 can write your letter if needed.

I used a company called Red Star Travel that's based in Seattle for my visa. I've used them 2X and they've been great both times. Now's a great time to go to Russia with the $ being so high against the Ruble.

I just read if you wait until the World Cup, you can get a fan ID if you buy a ticket and get in without a visa.
