Girl and the goat is the only answer.

Edit: and whoever downvoted that clearly has the palate of a street urchin, and you should be taken out back and beaten with a rubber hose.

I always see these recommendations. Isn't it nearly impossible to get a reservation? Realistically, can you even get a table here for dinner at normal dinner hours?

West loop is the new trendy area where girl and the goat is. It's fantastic but if you can't get in there are tons of great options downtown. Great steakhouses, Italian, and of course pizza.

Just got back last week

Gibsons is fantastic. So is Ditkas and I found a new trendy Italian place called Siena Tavern that was legit.

Can't go wrong in Chicago. You can throw a rock and find a great restaurant.

Reservations definitely should be made far in advance, but all I can tell you is that even if you get a late one, it's worth it. My SO and I had a 10:45 reservation on a Friday night. Went home, took a nap, and got up and went. I regret nothing.

Girl and the Goat, if you call you could get a reservation. Acceptable back up is the Publican or Little Goat Diner.

As for Girl and the Goat, order the Halibut for yourself. All the dishes are small plates, but you will need a Halibut all for yourself. Trust me.

Unless someone drops their reservation, you aren't getting a table at Girl and the Goat on Thursday night. Of course, you could always test your luck and see if there are a couple open spots at the bar.

ETA: Stephanie Izard, the executive chef at Girl and the Goat, opened up Duck Duck Goat in the spring. Incredible dining experience, but you aren't getting a table there, either.

If West Loop, I would look at Publican, Carnivale, Au Cheval, or Avec. Great spots.

Au cheval might be the best burger I've ever had. The wait is ridiculous more often then not, so check out small cheval (their sister spot) as an alternate.

It's not impossible. At all. It is hard but get your name on a list of you're last minute. People drop out. I got a party of 8 on a weekend at 10:30 on same day notice.

Avec is great but very tiny.

Girl and the Goat, top to bottom, may just have the best menu i've ever eaten through. Literally every dish is a near home run, to me.

The girl and the goat is ok. Somewhat overrated.

The wife and I ate at the purple pig, tango sur, blackbird, girl and the goat, and next. The girl and the goat didn't separate itself from any of those places.

If your party is 4 or fewer I think Tango Sur is a better option. It's about 10 ten north of river north near the Cubs field. Bring a cheap bottle of wine

After tango go to three dots aND a dash (go online and make a reservation) top 100 bar in the world.

Keep checking OpenTable. Last July I got a 7:45 Friday night reservation on Wednesday afternoon. Had been trying for a month. Obviously a cancelation, but they do happen.

I live down the street from tango sur.

As a byob Argentinian steakhouse it is amazing. Hands down my favorite steakhouse in the city. However, it is first come first serve, and on weekends the wait can easily be 2.5 hours. Get your name on the list at 7, grab drinks at corridor or butchers tap down southport, and you will likely be seated by 10. It's worth it though. Very reasonably priced, Great quality cuts of meat and you can bring your own Malbec (que Syrah across the street at southport and grace has a wonderful selection).
