One place I've not been is San Fran. Couple girlfriends want to go to Napa for bday celebrations.
Going mid June, Friday through Monday. Want to hit up a winery for a day tour. Should we stay in San Fran (have enough Marriott points to cover our stay) or stay in Napa? Napa looked twice as expensive and didn't have many options where I could cash out points.
Is it too far from Napa to rent a car or hire a driver for a vineyard outting?

Thanks!

Nah it's maybe an hour from Napa. If you want it to be a vacation focused on wine which includes visiting San Francisco one day, stay in wine country. If you want to focus on San Francisco and spend one day wine tasting, stay in SF.

Pic! I thought you had disappeared.

You're going to want to stay in Napa if that is the true purpose of your trip. Look at AirBnb or VRBO for better deals.

What are some options for activities in case we do choose to stay in SF but do Napa one day? Golden Gate, what else?

Personally I enjoy checking out all the different neighborhoods. You can walk around the Mission, Castro (the gayborhood), Haight Ashbury, Chinatown, north beach (little Italy), fishermans wharf, japan town. Go to Ghiradelli square. Ride on a trolley. See the sea lions at fishermans wharf (they smell tho for real) Check out the numerous dive bars and ethnic restaurants.

You know, pretty much do city stuff. I can have a full day walking around the streets of SF. If you would rather get buzzed in the vineyards for a few days then you can do that instead. Really depends on what yall want to do.

I didn't think there was anywhere on earth twice as expensive as San Francisco. Renting a car for a day to head to Napa is definitely possible.

In SF: Museums in GG park; shopping; Chinatown; baseball game.

Try Marin: Hiking on Mt Tam. There are lakes up top of Fairfax that are stunning. There's Muir Woods (redwoods). The coast is beautiful too - Stinson, Pt Reyes Station

Just got back from a long weekend. Did 3 nights in Sonoma and then afternoon in San Francisco before flying back on red eye.

Sonoma might be a little less sticker shock on the accommodations side. Easy to rent a driver (who will drive your rental car) or get a car service to ferry you from winery to winery.

Go to Sonoma if you want to spend the day tasting. The people there are really laid back, the drive is nicer and closer to the coast. There's a lot of cool little spots along the way, like Stinson Beach..gorgeous Pacific sunsets and photo ops.

Many of the wineries in Sonoma are close together, as well, and the scenery can't be beat. Also, downtown Sonoma is awesome, with great restaurants.
