I'm going on a trip in March. Just wanted to ask the travel experts if there is an ideal time to purchase tickets? Should I go ahead and book them soon or is there a better time to purchase them?

I travel somewhat often, basically just curious if there is a secret to buying them for the best deal?

None. If someone tells you otherwise - they are lying.

Just check often and buy at a price that you think is good compared to historical prices and one that passes the eye test. Kayak gives an opinion. I just use Google flights and check often.

Cheap flights are total bullshite. Sure, there are good deals to be had if you are available to fly out any day of the week, return any day of the week and fly out at any time of the day. That is simply not feasible for 99% of people. What good does it do to leave 2 days early for your vacation to save a couple hundred bucks if it means 2 extra nights in a hotel that costs more than you saved on a flight? Just find a price you are comfortable with on a line you prefer and go with it.

2 more days of vacation isn't enough?

Google flights set up a notification system where you can track flights for certain dates and they'll send you an email whether it goes up or down. Pretty interesting to see the trends in prices a month ago versus today. If you see it at the bottom of the trend, it may be a good time to book

I've got a trip to Central America in March, I've been scouting airfares for the past month for my travel dates. The fares haven't really moved much it being this far out from next March.

I'll pull the trigger this week on that travel.

I agree with the earlier point, once you do make the reservation, don't look back.

Obviously don't wait too long; the seats can all be taken and the fares do go up at two weeks out and again at a week out.

Buy on a Tuesday. Prices are supposedly better per my friend at United.

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic. But this is not true. And I don't work at United but know much better than that.

I'm so impatient. Been tracking flights for the United nonstop from Austin to Dulles for Christmas. Those tickets haven't budged since July from what I can tell. Holding out for a dip.

What is your itinerary? I will tell you the price you should be looking to get.

We have so much historical data on flight prices that basically any route you should know what price to look for. You may not be able to get that price if your times/dates are super specific but you will have an idea.

I know this is TD where everyone is a baller but in real life we have budgets and 2 extra days of vacation may not fit into someone's budget. Not to mention they may not even have 2 extra days to take off if they could afford it.

When you see that price, buy it & don't look again.

You can rebook the same flight on Southwest if lower and get refunded the difference.

When i fly home for Christmas I usually don't book till around Thanksgiving. Last year it dipped a good $100 on Thanksgiving Day.

Agree. The general "thought" is a Wednesday about 3 months before your trip. I fly almost weekly, and have gotten better prices the day before a trip sometimes. Luck of the draw. What you see is usually what the flight will be.

There are so many variables, it's hard to judge. I waited until a month before to buy my recent ticket to NYC and ended up paying ~$30 less than my friends who bought their tickets 3 months before the trip. I think a lot of it has to do with the capacity of the flights and their ability to fill up in time for the flight, but I could be wrong.

I checked daily for my flight and the ticket prices varied ~$100 over a 2 week period.

I usually try to book 60-90 days out which is what most "articles" seem to recommend also. If its a vacation I'll set a price tracker of what I want to pay until about 70 days out and unless its still stupid high I'll usually buy 60-70 days out. As said, you can often times get a great deal less than 2 weeks out but I never wait that long.

It seems like most of your "deals" are done 2-4 months out. Like deals are running now to book winter stuff, then around November they start to run deals for Spring, etc.

One of the things I do also for my vacations that are way out 9+ months, is I'll look at what the flights for that trip cost in 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, etc. and compare.

I'm looking at a trip to London right now for May/ June and flights are $1900. But in November, Feb, and April flights are $1200. So even though that is peek season, I'll put good money that someone will run a deal to get them quite a bit lower.
