Planning a trip with my family, ranging from 3yrs - 62yrs. This will be everyone's first time in Costa Rica. We thought about splitting it up between two cities, but have decided to do only one since we only have a week.

I was thinking about a little south of Manuel Antonio. Does anyone have any suggestions or other cities they would recommend over this area?

I've only been once, but stayed at Los Suenos. We went over to Jaco a couple of times. My favorite vacation ever.

Quepos just north of Manuel Antonio has a lot of hotels and restaurants. I don't know of much to the south, it was mostly empty highway. Personally I prefer to stay in an area like that rather than one overrun with tourists like Quepos and Manuel Antonio can be; but I also know I'm in the minority on that. In your situation I'd definitely opt for the Pacific and Manuel Antonio is very pretty even if it is touristy. Hopefully this has changed but when you get to the park don't fall for the con men trying to flag you down and charge you to park well before you get to the actual parking area.

If I had to pick one place, Quepos/Manuel Antonio area for me.

I would split it up and spend a day or two in and around San Jose, but that's me.

Happy Travels, It's beautiful there.

I traveled the country a few years back. Adult only trip. With kids? I would do Arenal, Guanacaste and a day trip down into a cloud forest.

I wouldn't necessarily not take my kids to Manuel Antonio or Limon, but it wouldn't be my first choice for sure. Stay the hell away from Jaco.

I spent a lot of time there and did quite a bit in terms of adventure and exploring. If you want some recommendations let me know.

Thanks for all of the info. Why would Manuel Antonio not be a first choice for taking kids? More dangerous than other areas?

With the ages you mentioned, your best bet is to stay at a resort and plan day trips from the resort. I've spent a week at a resort near Manuel Antonio and did day trips for zip lines, white water rafting and rain forest/hummingbird garden/butterfly garden trips from the resort.

The rest of our trip consisted of travelling across the country, and it was not enjoyable for those in the group who are less adventurous.

Blue water is easily accessible if you care to fish.

There is definitely a different vibe in MA. I won't say it's dangerous, b/c it's not...but, I encountered several situations even in the touristy areas that were not ideal for younger people. Pick pockets, etc... There's more theft and the criminals are pretty open. IF that's where you go, you just need to be very aware of where you are staying/touring.

The tourist vibe is more prevalent down there, too. The best ziplining is up north around Arenal. I stayed someplace with their own zipline in the jungle. To say it was amazing is an understatement. Water fall repelling was great and I took a river "boat" (pretty sure it was a barely floating barge ) up to the Nicaragua border. Up north is more laid back and there's an endless supply of soda's to eat at.

Considering taking the GF to Hermosa to propose. Think we will only have 3 nights, but I can get there with miles for nearly nothing.

Fishing: Quepos, Marina pez Vela has cheaper charters than Los suenos. Negotiate price at the marina during the low season

Crocs Casino in Jaco is pretty fun, family friendly, and has easy access to a lot of tours.

I'd stay out of San jose except maybe the night before the return flight to avoid traffic delays.

Bring PLENTY small bills (20s) and careful where you swipe a CC. Download whatsapp on phone, everyone there uses it.

LSUshock...consider Villa Caletas at sunset. Close to SJO airport.
