This is what I'm thinking at a high level so far. Any general advice/recommendations or specific activities would be greatly appreciated. This is all based on some light reading and google-mapping so please let me know if anything looks unrealistic.

Day 1 - Fly into Portland late.
Day 2 - Full day in Portland (visiting some friends, beer, etc.)
Day 3 - Full day in Portland
Day 4 - Drive to Seattle (scenic route; either east through Hood River and Yakima Valley or west along coast as much as possible)
Day 5 - Full day in Seattle
Day 6 - Drive North to San Juan Islands & eventually Vancouver
Day 7 - Full day in Victoria
Day 8 - Drive to Olympic National Park and half day in Park
Day 9 - Full day in Olympic National Park
Day 10 - Full day in Olympic National Park
Day 11 - Fly out of Seattle

A couple of specific questions:

Is Day 10 necessary? I'm sure we could kill 2.5 days in park, but we aren't super adventurous or anything. Should we spend an extra day elsewhere or save the day of vacation?

Should we only spend a half day in Victoria and keep going to Olympic National Park on Day 7?

If you're into wine at all the Willamette Valley (runs from Portland south to Eugene) produces some fantastic Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Might take a day to do some tasting.

And if you're into beer the JaxTiger should come along and get you headed in the right direction.

Not a huge wine drinker, but I do like Pinot Noirs and I'm sure the wife would enjoy a day of tastings. Good call. Thanks

Portland is a huge shithole. I have no idea why anyone goes there other than fly in and travel to the surrounding areas.

If you're not hiking, that's probably too long. Also, spend another day in Seattle. Take the ferry to the San Juans, drive to Vancouver from Bellingham.

Bingo!

Scrub a day from Porthole and put it on Seattle or the San Juans.

Stay the night out on Friday Harbor, it's wonderful out there.

The ferry schedule should be OK, remember you have to reserve your spots on the Washington State Ferries.

If you call a very metropolitan city with great restaurants and entertainment and is surrounded by unbelievably beautiful and diverse natural resources a shithole, then I guess you're right.

I think that the best assets for both Seattle and Portland are just outside of the cities. Seattle has the Olympic National Forest, the Puget Sound, and Mt Ranier, and Portland has the Columbia River Gorge, Oregon Coast, and Mt. Hood.

Make sure you check these places out. As someone mentioned, if you don't want to spend 2.5 days in the Olympic National Forest, then take one of those days and go to Victoria, BC, or Port Townsend, WA.

Took a similar route in August. Flew into Seattle and caught ferry out of Anacortes to San Juan Island. Stayed on island for two nights. Took ferry to Sydney, BC and drove to Victoria. After 2 nights in Victoria took ferry to Port Angeles and drove to Olympic NP. Two nights there then drove to Seattle for last two nights.

Are you going to Butchart Gardens while in Victoria?

We went for a few hours. It's one of those things you have to do if there.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far. I probably won't cut down much time in Portland because (a) I have some friends that live there which is a primary reason for the visit and (b) I love good beer. However, thanks for the comments, and I'll probably plan to spend our days outside of the city.

Haven't gotten that specific yet, but yes, will likely go

If/when this plan comes to fruition, I'll let you know. I'd enjoy that
