We go every year and have for over 7 years now. We prefer to go north of Duck. Duck beaches (at least off of Scarborough Lane) are narrow (dune to water) and there tends to be more people. We were just there in late July and they had just dredged and pumped sand back onto the beaches; the sand was coarse having just been on the ocean floor days before. If you want to stay in Duck and can get a property on Sandy Ridge Road that is nice; it is the last habitation before the Army Corp of Engineers owned land so you can get to sparsely populated beach. we last stayed there 4-5 years ago, so I can't comment on the quality of the sand there.
Carolla is our favorite; Whalehead beach is a great sandy beach, but it can be packed at peak times as the houses there are pretty close together. We actually like staying North of there in Pine Island- the island is narrow there so with fewer homes are fewer people but the same beach. We stayed there in late June of this year.
I've never stayed further south than Duck so I can't help you there.

Agreed here...I prefer Corolla (Whalehead) and Duck.
But if you are not staying in either you can drive to Avon which was always nice when I went.

Where you staying? All the beaches are pretty quiet on weekdays. It's a cool vibe out there.
