Non-Touristy Activities in NY?

I know there's a couple NY threads in the past I can sift through, and I will, but my question is a bit more specific rather than a general question.
Heading to NYC with my family for Christmas, and looking for some stuff to do during the day aside from the touristy crap. Looking online really only pulls up things like "Go see the Christmas tree!" and "Take a tour of 30 Rockefeller Plaza!"
Looking for some things to do between eating and drinking during the day (nights are pretty much taken care of).
We're definitely going to the 9/11 Memorial (not exactly local, I know, but it's something I haven't seen yet), but other than that I'm not sure where we should go.
TIA

Go to top of belvedere castle in Central Park , we go married there per a recommendation from a friend. One of the best and least known vantage photo spots of Central Park

I'm not sure if it's touristy, but we took the tram to Roosevelt Island and walked around at sunset. There weren't really anyone else around and it was a very cool view of the city from a different angle and riding the air tram was really cool.

If you have a day and willing to travel go visit West Point it is an hour north of the city.
Access to post is restricted as a result of 9/11 but they offer tours at the visitor center. I guess the tour part makes it "touristy". Obviously, I'm biased but I think it would be a fun day if you are looking to get away from the city.
Not sure if it is open yet but there is a ski slope there as well. I would recommend calling ahead to make sure it is open first.
If like hiking or state parks you could visit Bear Mountain park or Palisades
Have fun.

I like heading east or north.
There's a commuter train that heads north to towns like sleepy hollow, or you can head east out to Long Island. I absolutely love the wooded areas in LI, it's such a great change of pace from the city.
