Places to eat, fun day trips, where to stay to avoid bums? Looking to drive to the coast for a day trip. Any other tips/recs?

For starters it would be helpful to know if you mean Portland, Maine or Portland, Oregon. I'm guessing based on the bum comment you mean the latter.

Hood river is in the center of the Columbia River gorge and less than an hour away. Was definitely one of my favorite parts of Oregon.

Embrace the bums, we're just people, too...

ETA: Seriously, the link Dualed has hit's most of the high points. What part of town are you staying in and do you have kids with you?

If you're staying in Portland, and want to do day trips, Cannon Beach is a great day trip and the beaches are incredible. This is the view from Ecola State Park right between Cannon Beach and Seaside.

Astoria is a cool town right at the mouth of the Columbia River and the Astoria Column view is incredible, as long as you don't mind the 180 steps to get to the top. I recommend Fort George Brewery as a nice place to eat and drink some good beers. The wood-fired pizza is excellent.

As mentioned, Hood River is fantastic. I would cross the Columbia River into Washington at the Bridge of the Gods and drive along the north side of the Columbia River Gorge. I do this because the view from Washington back into Oregon is better and you can get clear views of Mt Hood - especially when you cross back into Oregon into Hood River on the Hood River Bridge. Several great brewery/food options: pFriem, Full Sail, and Double Mountain. Make sure to stop and see Multnomah Falls on the way. Multnomah Falls is right off the highway on the drive between Portland and Hood River and is very easy to access. It is closer to Portland than to Hood River.

Silver Falls is a nice state park near Silverton. Nice little drive of about an hour, and you can hike an 8 mile loop and see 10 major water falls. There are plenty of shorter options if the 8 mile hike is too much.

There are lots of great food options, and you can just pick something that feels right to you. Some of the neighborhoods that you might want to go to are: The Pearl District, Divison St, NE Alberta St, Mississippi Ave, and the Hawthorne District. All are cool neighborhoods and have some great restaurants. Another thing to check out are the food cart pods. There's some good food to be had at those, it's usually a quick, relatively cheap option and everyone in your group can choose a different option. The biggest pod in Portland is on Alder street.

RaginCajunz went there this week, or last, I think. Maybe he could check in and give some recs.

It's been pretty cool here, recently. High's in Portland were only in the 70's. The coast is usually 10 degrees cooler. Make sure you look at the forecast and prepare for the temps on the coast. It can be chilly, especially in the early morning and late evenings. A sweatshirt and/or a windbreaker is advised.

Owner is an arrogant chode who likes to lecture people

I guess when you always have an hour long wait, you can afford to talk down to customers like they are unworthy peasants

Can you take Uber from Portland airport to a downtown hotel, or is it taxi only?
