Need advice for planning New York trip

I plan on taking a trip to New York some time next year but have no idea of the city layout or what area to stay. I'ver been to Chicago before and really enjoyed the experience. We stayed in the Theatre District and visited Fields Museum, Museum of Science and Industry, Adler Planetarium, Shedd Aquarium, and Millennium Park. What made that trip enjoyable was that we were in a nice area to walk around in and just about every attraction we visited was a 5-10 minute inexpensive cab ride away. However, I have no idea what to expect with New York.
We plan on staying 5-6 nights and visiting the typical tourist attractions like the Museum of Natural History, The Met (I'm not an art snob but enjoy things like Egyptian artifacts and that type of thing so I'm guessing the Met is worth a visit?), Statue of Liberty, Empire State building, Times Square, and catching a couple shows on Broadway.
My primary questions are:
!) What is the best time to visit? (Are summers miserable there? Would Mardi Gras week or Thanksgiving week be a better time to visit?)
2) Where should we stay? (Mainly looking for the best location in the city that puts us closest to most of the attractions that we plan to visit. I'm open to spending $300-500/night for a nice view and convenient location.)
3) Is a cab the best means of transportation? Are subways safe and more convenient? I don't even want to think about renting a car and driving around in New York.
Andy advice is appreciated.

1. Yes, summers are surprisingly hot there. I don't know if it's all the concrete or what, but I've been surprised at how hot it gets in NY in the summer. Thanksgiving would probably be better than Mardi Gras, but honestly I'd shoot for April-May or September-October if you can.
2. Check out SoHo and Flat Irons. It's close enough to all that touristy stuff but you won't be in the middle of all that cluster known as Midtown.
3. Don't bother with driving, just stick with cabs/uber and the subway. Like most things, be smart about using the subway and you'll be fine (i.e.- maybe catch an uber at midnight rather than jump on the train). Cabs are obviously plentiful, but so are ubers. I would just play that by ear, it's not hard to catch a ride in the city.

I'm not an art snob either, but the Met is amazing. The Egyptian exhibit was probably my favorite, along with the Assyrian section, and the girlfriend loved the Monet's.
We did a boat ride to Ellis Island (excellent museum and only took about 3 hours to get a full expierence) and you get a great view of the Statue of Liberty without the hassle of getting off on the island itself.
We took the subway everywhere, even some late ones at like 1 AM and I never felt unsafe fwiw.

Spring or Fall

2) Where should we stay?
Based on what you are describing, the South end of Central Park.

There are so many damn people everywhere, I never feel unsafe anywhere in Manhattan at any time. Cabs are abundant, subway lines are everywhere.

pretty much this. summer weather is awful due to the humidity, and winter is self explanatory.
do not, under any circumstances, rent a car. buy a week long metro pass, but also be prepared to take cabs or ubers.
dont waste time trekking to the top of the statue of liberty. go see the 9/11 monument at the WTC.
you will be traveling to the greatest city in the world.

Not Mardi Gras week. It will be too cold. Thanksgiving may also be a little chilly as well. Ideally you'd want April/May or late August/September/October. It gets hot a frick in the summer. Seriously, hotter than the south due to the concrete/pavement and difficulty finding central AC to escape it all.

As someone else mentioned...with that price range, somewhere near Central Park South would be good (anywhere between 57th and 65th or so between 5th avenue and 7th or 8th avenue). It's very central but also a little away from the ridiculously tourist-y areas like times square.

based on your price range for hotel, i'm guessing you don't mind spending a little money. so what i would do is buy a week-long metro pass. it will cost like 30soemthing. i can't even remember. but that will cover you for subway/bus anywhere at anytime. then just uber or cab whenever you don't feel like hopping on the subway. uber during non peak hours can be extremely cheap and cabs are abundant.
plan your trip ahead of time in terms of places you want to hit but leave some free time to just walk around, explore, go to outer boroughs, etc. for your restaurants, get reservations far far in advance for the nicer ones. but there's plenty of places you can just go hop in without one and have a great meal.
if you're going to do a "top of the" kinda thing, do either 30 rock or 1WTC. don't do empire state. i really highly recommend 1WTC at night. you can book the ticket in advance. it's a stunning view and they have a rooftop bar up there. seriously unbeatable.
enjoy it

Any hotel recommendations? I just booked a week at the Lotte Hotel. Bad choice

We went in March and the weather was perfect. Light jacket at night and short sleeves during the day.

I don't know much about the hotel itself. The location is good though. The EMFBDM and 6 trains all in walking distance. Right by Rockefeller. In my old hood. You'll be great.
