Anything closer to BR than a 24 hour drive to Denver? Willing to go anywhere it won't be 90 degrees.
ETA- Pretty much set on a NC trip. After hike, will likely spend a night in Asheville/Charlotte/you tell me. Recs on where to stay and where to grab a drink much appreciated.
College-ish budget but one night won't kill me.

We drove 16 hours to Raton, NM earlier this month and then 5 hours to Aspen. That'll be your best bet. The Microtel in Raton is a GREAT deal. (Aspen-Snowmass Wilderness is almost unbeatable, and it won't be hot).
Other than that, you'll need to go anywhere from northern Georgia to Virginia. Check out
Maggie Valley, NC
Blowing Rock/Boone, NC area
Get All Trails app! I used it heavily for my 35 miler in the Tetons a couple weeks ago.

Smokey Mountains, especially in North Carolina would probably be just fine and it's a hell of a lot closer than Denver.

How many miles do you want? There's a good way to connect a few trails en route to Mt. Mitchell (NC) then you can tell everyone that you walked to the highest point east of the Mississippi.
It includes about 3,000 feet of elevation gain, and is probably 11-12 hours from BR.
It's just a one or two nighter. Are you looking for more?

Just a 3-4 day probably so 25-40 miles maybe.
Mt Mitchell sounds interesting!
I'd be down for a 2 nighter and could just explore a city in NC or along the way. Just want to get away

I highly recommend Boone for exploring (home of Appalachian State University)
Mt. Mitchell would obviously provide the coolest weather. It'll likely be in the upper 40s above 6,000 feet on any given August night.
There's a 17 mile loop trail and more can be added.

Check out the Smoky Mtns. There are backcountry campsites you need to reserve for a small fee. nps.gov for park info there is also Cherokee National Forest in the area.

The Smokies will be the nearest drive.
Spanish Peaks in SE Colorado for higher altitude stuff. You can search summit post for trail info. I've never been but have been looking at the area because of the closer drive to Louisiana.

Looking at Mt. Mitchell. Looks like the Mt. Mitchell trail is about 6 miles and ends obviously at the summit, with a campsite within a close walk. Say it takes most of day to do the full in and out due to elevation gain.
There is also the deep gap trail (12 miles) which approaches the peak from the north side. Seeing mixed reviews on if I could do it in one day.
Anyone have any more specifics?
Thanks.

Unless you go on a Monday Tuesday or Wednesday anywhere worth a damn to camp at is going to be full. This goes for anywhere in the country during the summer not just NC.

I was there in June with my wife. We went about maybe 3 hours in on the deep gap trail. Everyone we met on there way back had camped the night on the trail. I doubt it's something you would want to do in a day. The elevation change makes a difference. Mt. Mitchell is the highest point east of the MS river. Also, it's 15-20 degrees cooler there than it is in Asheville. It's a beautiful place, enjoy.

You going solo or with someone? Flights to Denver are cheap right now. Good public transportation.
Oh- just saw you committed to NC. I've spent some time in the Bryson City area. Stayed at the NOC had a blast. You can camp at the NOC tent sites for fairly cheap and the AT goes right through it. I slept in my hammock end of June very comfortable last summer. Great bar at NOC also.
Have fun.

Blowing Rock/Boone
Sliding Rock in the Pisgah Forest is supposed to be awesome.
Asheville would be a great place to stay, there are many breweries in town to check out and Biltmore is kinda cool (but pricey)
