Yay- just searched for Rapid City and found this thread. Heading that direction next weekend on a road trip. Glad this is here- thanks.

Agree with both Black Hills/Badlands and Big Bend. Been to both. Happened to hit Custer on the weekend of the Bison Round-up two years ago. That was something to see, couple thousand bison being round-up throughout the park and being driven to corrals. I just checked and it happened this past weekend.

Also less than a two drive from Rapid City is Devil's Tower in Wyoming (for Close Encounters fans).

It's a good time to mention the Trinity Alps of northern CA. They get overshadowed by the redwoods, Tahoe, Yosemite, probably even Lassen Volcanic.

Ive mentioned them on these boards but don't get a lot of responses. A beautiful relatively unknown area

Joseph/Enterprise area of Oregon as well

I'm taking this recommendation, thanks! I'll be back in the US in next month and I have 3 weeks that I'll have home. I want to do a classic American tour, and this sounds really fantastic.

Any more tips/experiences worth noting in the area?
