Some friends and I started doing a baseball trip each summer a couple years ago. This year we are going to California. Going to the Angels game Thursday night, Dodgers Friday night, then heading to San Diego. Our hotel the first two nights is in Anaheim south. Our evenings are booked up because of the games but looking for things to do/sites to see during the day. LA is so spread out so this is the concern. Last year we did New York and with it being such a compact city it was easy to walk or take the subway. Not sure about getting around in LA this year. We will have rentals but would prefer not to have yo use them too much. TIA

Also should add this is a dads/sons trip. Will have boys with us ranging in age from 9-14.

I love living in Los Angeles, but I dont see much appeal for anyone visiting here. As you know, the city is very spread out (largest metro area in the country), and public transportation pretty much sucks, you will need to rely on your rental.
My best recommendation would be to spend time in one of the beach cities; Malibu, Santa Monica/venice, Manhattan, Newport, laguna- they are all great. I'd say skip your typical tourist crap like Hollywood and universal. LA has some great ethnic food if you are a foodie, particularly Mexican, sushi, Chinese and middle eastern.

I would think the kids would enjoy Disney.

With a game each night I don't know if trying to do Disney during the day is feasible. How much time would we need to have a worthwhile day in universal studios?

We drove out there last year and spent a few days in LA. We stayed in North Hollywood.
I'd definitely recommend Venice Beach as there's lots of activity there. Then you can drive out to Malibu Beach toward Pepperdine. Beverly Hills/Rodeo Drive should be on the list of things to do.
If you go to the grounds on Griffith Observatory you get good views of the skyline and Hollywood sign.

Jesus, why(and where) did you stay in North Hollywood ?
I do agree with all your recommendations.

Disneyland is close to Angels so you could do a lot in a day at Disney before hitting Angels game at night.
Also, they have a train that you can take from Los Angeles to San Diego which might be neat to do, on way you could stop in La Jolla which is a nice area to visit. Kayak the cove area.
In San Diego, check out Coronado and head up to Cabrillo Monument (great overlook) and then you can go down to tide pools - kids will love.

North Hollywood
The women of the family made that pick and while I think iit was partially based on its proximity to Universal Studios they really wanted to stay at the Garland because of its decor and such so that's what we ended up doing.
It was in a nice area and we did eat some at restaurants near there although we also ate in the other areas we visited as well.
As an interesting aside as we drove toward LA we went through the remnants of a fire on I-15 which was a pretty big deal and was on the news so we encountered a lbit of a delay. LINK

Ahhh you stayed at the beverly garland. You are correct the zip code probably is north Hollywood, but luckily for you, its right on the studio city border. I'm glad you didn't stay in the heart of north Hollywood.
I grew up about 5 minutes from that hotel.
