Wife and I did Disney and Universal last year, we enjoyed Universal the most. I would say the top rides for us in Universal were Transformers and Harry Potter Forbidden Journey. Both are 3D rides and were just cool as could be. Also make sure you grab a butter-beer while you are in harry potter world.

Stay on site at Royal Pacific, Portofino, or Hard Rock. You get the unlimited express pass, used to skip lines (except 2 of the Harry Potter rides). We stayed at Royal Pacific and really like it, it's the cheaper of the three. All three hotels are walking distance or a short boat road to both parks and City Walk.

Yep, Royal Pacific is the way to go. The others aren't really giving you anything nicer for the extra money - especially the Hard Rock. The 2 newer cheap hotels don't give you the express pass thing, and you definitely want that. So Royal Pacific is the way to go.
Watch online for specials. They always have good deals, like stay 4 nights for the price of 3, or a 3rd day free with a 2 day park pass. Only a couple of the newest rides don't let you use the express pass, so take advantage of the 1 hr. early park admission when you stay on site and hit those rides first. Because of the express pass, Universal blows away Disney. In 2-3 days you'll be able to hit every ride in both parks. There are plenty good restaurants there too. Once you arrive on site, you won't have to leave for anything til it's time to go home. And there's a Hart & Huntington on site in case you want to get tatted up while you're there. I got my first tattoo there.

Universal is a good park with decent rides. HP, Transformers and the Hulk were my favorites. Never had the turkey leg so I can't comment on that.

I did all 3 resort with and without kids and Portofino will be the best without kids.

As another poster mentioned, staying at any of the on-site hotels allows you early admission to one of the parks each day. You definitely want to use Early Admission to go on the Harry Potter rides, as they don't have an Express Pass option. Whichever park has early admission that day, do the Potter ride first, then get in line for Hogwart's Express (a train ride that actually takes you to the other park). Once you get to the other park, head straight for the other Potter ride. You should be able to knock out the two Potter rides and Hogwart's Express in an hour.

The Potter rides, along with new Kong ride, will likely have the highest wait times during the day, which is why you want to ride them first.

I'm assuming you're asking about Universal Orlando and not Hollywood. I haven't been to Universal Studios park in Orlando since they opened the Harry Potter expansion there....but I've heard nothing but great things about the Hogwart's Express ride between the parks. You do need a multi-park ticket to board that ride. I will say that Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (in Hogwart's Castle in Islands of Adventure) is, hands down, the BEST theme park attraction I've ever experienced. It's phenomenal. The entire Hogsmeade village section of Islands of Adventure is awesome. I would assume the Diagon Alley area in Universal Studios park is on par with that.

I also really enjoyed the Men in Black and Mummy rides there. The Simpsons area looks cool and much more expanded since I've been there. They are also working on finishing a new Skull Island section of Islands of Adventure to tie into the new King King movie coming. Not sure when it's slated to open but it looks awesome.
