Long weekend trip ideas

Looking to do a long weekend Friday-Monday trip for my mothers 60th birthday, in mid October. It would be my mother, father, wife, and myself.
I originally wanted the Ritz Carlton Key Biscayne but it's booked. Looking for somewhere that is an easy flight from MSY, great resort and spa with good restaurant options, beach is a plus.

Fantastic reviews. Close enough to the beach to go a time or two, great little town of Fairhope is 10 mintues away. Quite, low key, plenty of good gold in the area.
ETA: golf, not gold. Gold would be cool though because I live right down the road.

This is what I was going to suggest. It's a nice place on the bay and Fairhope is a cool little town.
East of Destin is also a nice resort area. Seaside/Water Color. They are supposed to have a kick arse high end hotel named The Pearl.
I wouldn't want to waste money/time flying for just a quick weekend trip, but that's just me.
If you do want a quick flight, what about one of the nice resorts in the hill country north of San Antonio?
