Need a carry-on that holds a reasonable amount of gear but is light enough to easily lift into overhead bins( I'm 5'4" and not a bodybuilder!).

if you dont need wheels duffels or backpacks. There are several UL backpacks that cater towards airline travel as well.

I'm 5'3" and I feel your pain. Travel pro Maxlite 4 does the trick for me. 19" international expandable 'spinner weighs just 5 lbs empty. Loaded up, it is abt 15 lbs; I can easily put it into the overhead without assistance. Paired with the spacious underseat tote, I can pack for 10 days. The Maxlite 4 line is designed to be carry-on, so it's not quite as robust/sturdy as the other Travelpro lines. I've checked the roll aboard a couple times with no problems, but I've never checked the spinner.
