Kenai Peninsula Self Drive Tour

Getting off the cruise ship on June 10th, 2016 and picking up a rental car. My wife and I plan on driving around the peninsula for a few days before flying out of Anchorage. Does anyone have experience here? I have read about the Spit in Homer, Kenai fjords National Park, Exit Glacier, etc. We are up for anything and want to see as much as possible. Thanks

Go salmon fishing on the Kasilof River.
If in Homer, take a trip across the bay to Halibut Cove. It's an artist's community, and has a nice restaurant right on the water.

Definitely go to Homer - Lands End Resort is at the end of the spit and a very nice place to stay.
If possible try to go Halibut fishing - they leave right out of the Marina in Homer.

Exit Glacier. Will not take but a few hours unless you want to hike up to the Harding Icefield
Cooper Landing, Kenai Lake is beautiful.
Hope is an out of the way ghost town (sort of) and you can raft 6 Mile Creek there.
Homer. You can do a lot out of homer including flying in to see the bears at Katmai. It's a beautiful town.

If you decide to drive to Homer, one stop along the way is the village of Ninilchik. It's an old Russian village and still has an active Russian Orthodox Church, a remnant from the days Alaska was a Russian territory.
From Ninilchik you can look across Cook's Inlet and see three active volcanos on the other side of the inlet. Also every time I've been there (six times) we've seen a large group of bald eagles at the foot of the hill in Ninilchik waiting for the tide to expose the large clam bed along the shoreline.
In Homer at the top of the hill before you start to descend to the Spit, the main Wildberry Store is a fantastic place to pick up genuine Alaskan jellies and honey products.
We were going to go back to Alaska the first week in July, 2017 but something has come up which won't allow us to go.
I'm appropriately envious of you.

Cool place. Nice people...the Encelewskis are good people too, they run the native council out there.
I'd recommend stopping there, Cooper Landing is neat...good ice cream at the only stop in town.
Kenai Lake is beautiful.
Fishing on the Kasilof is good...know a couple charters out that way.
I'd definitely stay a day or two in Seward. Halibut fishing is da bomb in both Seward and Homer...trolling for kings is fun too.
Trail right before Seward is awesome can't remember the name but could get it for you if you want...bring bear spray during the summer

That would be great if you could get the name of that trail. We are planning to do a good bit of hiking depending on the weather.

Not too sure - Was up there at the Hospital in Homer for work years ago. We stayed at Lands End resort (3 weeks in Dec, 3 in Jan and 3 in Feb) Salty Dog was the bar we hung out - there was no one there in Dec. They opened this up for us in Jan & Feb as we had a large team there working.
There was a bar at the resort but I can't remember the name.

I remember when Land's End was a sh!thole. We stayed in rickety old bunk beds and had a shared hall bathroom. I haven't stayed there in 40 years, and I think it's much nicer, now.

I've stayed in the Edgewater and Windsong Lodge in Seward. Both were brand new at the time, but I liked the Windsong for it's layout and proximity to the Exit Glacier. It's out of town on the road to the glacier and the river is beautiful. Edgewater is really close to the Sealife Center.

Thanks everyone! However we have a slight change of plans. Instead of heading to Homer we're going to stay near Girdwood (any hiking suggestions?) and head to Cooper Landing to do some rafting before heading to Seward. We're also looking to doing some ice hiking near Seward if anyone has been and has your recommendations? Thanks again!

Chugach Nat Forest
Being a national forest website it's a little tough to get around. But they have the trails on Kenai Peninsula listed along with a decent map you can print out.

If you're hardcore, the Crow Pass trail. You can hike for days or do a loop by coming back on another trail, can't remember the name. For something a little easier, the Winner Creek trail.
