I searched and didn't find an answer to this question, so please don't kill me.

We are headed to Jackson Hole soon for skiing. I'm considering taking my son to the Elk preserve and/or Grand Teton National Park. Are these worth it in the winter?

Also, if anyone has food/drink recommendations, please share.

We didn't do the elk preserve bc we were busy on the slopes the whole time, but it did come highly recommended. We stayed in Teton Village and spent most of our time at the Handle Bar. It was at the base of the mountain and had good beers and food. Get a lesson with Big Mike if that is something you are interested in.

If you want to go see Yellow Stone National Park, which is only like an hour from Jackson, I recommend renting snowmobiles and doing a day out in the national park. I went last year around this time and it was easily the most fun part of my trip.

Wife and I went in January 2012. We didn't ski but did the Elk preserve and did the snowmobile tour to Old Faithful. They are both definitely worth it.

You can see the Elk from the road (not close though) but the wagon tour takes you right through them. Very much a one of a kind opportunity.

The National Park is only open to snowmobiles in winter. Plenty of companies that do tours. Most will cloth you, feed you, and take you to all the highlights back and forth to Old Faithful. This was one of the most memorable days I've ever had on vacation.

Hijack. Thinking about going there in may? Would this be a good time to go to Jackson hole and explore the city and surrounding areas ?

I go around May every year for work. Weather is usually in the 50-60s and sunny during the day, and it drops to the 30s at night. There isn't much to do in Jackson itself, but I spend 3 extra days each time I go, rent a car, and travel around Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. Mind you I go by myself, but I find it very enjoyable exploring the parks.

Probably (and it may not be close) the worst month to go. But if that's your only time, do it. There's still plenty to do. Its the mud season because the snow is melting. Rivers are brown, some roads close, and much of the ski resort and parks have limited hours and access.

Given that, I wouldn't tell you not to go. Its still a great place and tons to do.

They call May the mud season but I can't imagine anytime not good for JH. For the other guy, log on to seejh.com and look at the Elk Preserve. You can see the animals. Awesome. You can rent a carriage or whatever you call it to ride up close. The only downside is the road to the Teton's is closed. But a snowmobile is good.

We did the elk preserve and a snow mobile tour (12 hours) I'd highly recommend both. Big assed snow. Saw bison, moose and loads of deer. Cheap too.
