Is Montego Bay, Jamaica a family destination place?

Just realized that Southwest now flies here (and maybe they have for a while?). I know nothing about this place and while I could research online, I'd rather hear from posters that have been there.

I have two children, ages 9 and 6 and ideally, we can stay for free at a Hilton property and fly for free.

Is it worth burning up my reward points for this destination getaway?

We stayed at the Half Moon and it was great, couldnt tell you about any Hilton properties though. Golf at the White Witch (IIRC) was awesome. Other than that, it's what you would expect out of a Jamaican vacation.

Yes, if you want your family to get contact highs from a mile away.

Looks like I'll scratch this one off the list of places to go. I was hoping to find a resort hotel destination to eliminate any outside possibilities, but it looks like I may be better served looking and going elsewhere.

Take a look at the Hilton in Costa Rica. I believe SW about to start flying there via Houston.

It would be ok if you were to keep to secure places. Make sure you're at a secure hotel. Keep to the beach that costs money to enter. Sponsored excursions, etc. There's a Margaritaville with water play things, but I wouldn't miss the Pork Pit, either. Out of all the places we've visited, I think Montego Bay was most memorable to my kid. Go figure.

If on a cruise the shore excursions could be okay for kids, would not take young ones though, because if something happened like getting sick I would not want to be there.

Just take those snotty nosed brats to Gulf Shores and leave the cool destinations nice & quiet for the adults...

Seriously - Montego Bay is mostly all inclusive resorts. You don't need to leave those places and if you pick a "family" resort your kids shouldn't be exposed to anything worse than they would see stateside.(ie. drunk white people)

I went to a wedding at the Half Moon, really nice property. The rest of Montego Bay sucks though.

Jamaica is just a shite hole in general. If you go just get an all inclusive and never leave.

The only time we left the resort was to play golf across the street, or one night we went to this local place for Jamaican jerk chicken/pork/shrimp. The food was amazing but looked like a good place to get stabbed if you said the wrong thing.

I've been 3 times, and while I agree it "looks" dangerous around town, I never felt even slightly concerned for my safety. I cant think of a single encounter with the locals where they were not friendly.

Slow as shite, with no concept of customer service, but very polite and friendly.

And the all inclusives at Montego Bay are family friendly, but Ochos Rios is a much better destination.

ETA: The most I was "harrassed" was by the coke dealer on the surfboard just off the resorts beach. But even he was friendly as he tried to peddle his blow.

I liked Negril much more than Mo Bay. Shuttle bus ride to Negril is terrifying to say the least. Not familiar with Hilton properties, but the all-inclusives are fantastic and great for kids.

They will offer u drugs in front of your kids. Its basically a shithole with some nice resorts. Absolutely dont leave resort.

The scuba and fishing sucks. Very overfished. Fish traps all along reef
