Is a 36 minute layover long enough long enough at IAH (Houston)
Posted by RudeDog11 on 2/6/17 at 8:11 pm30
I'm looking at possibly booking a flight but the layover is only 36 minutes at George Bush International. Do you experienced travelers believe that is enough time to make the connection?

That's pushing it. It's doable but you will have to high tail it. Don't get carried away by the smell of pappasitos fajitas

You'll be fine unless there is an IRROP and you are booked on 2 separate tickets, on two different airlines.

Changing terminals?

Both United. But it's an international flight

United flys in & out of 4 of the 5 terminals, international out of E though

Nope not for an international flight. No fricking way.
All depends on the flight. IAH-MEX? I'm guessing that's served almost hourly. IAH-DXB? Yeah, make sure you've got more time.

I'd see if there is a 5:00 am out of Alexandria. It really isn't enough time for an international connection.
And make sure you have 2-3 hours on the way back.

Where is your seat on the arrival?
Keep in mind that 20 and back adds a good 7min.
Also gate checking will be problematic.

layover is only 36 minutes
That would stress me out the entire flight, knowing I had such a short layover.
Especially an international flight.
I basically won't even book a flight unless my layover is at least an hour now. I don't want to be running from plane to plane...with no time to use the bathroom, buy a bottle of water, eat, etc. Flying is stressful enough, why make it more stressful?

Good shout. I would pay to get Premium Economy on the first leg to get a seat as far up as possible.

I don't know about United, but I know Emirates and Qatar Airways both close boarding about 20 mins prior to takeoff. Is this the case for United? And, if so, is that included in your 36 mins? You may have a lot less than 36 mins.

They won't close the gate on you if you are connecting United to United. In-fact, if you are cutting it close, let the staff know when you board in alexandria about your connection. They'll page the outgoing flight and hold it for you in case there is a chance you will make it upon landing at IAH.

Thanks for all of the help. I'm having second thoughts on it now. I'm worried about luggage making the transfer too.
If everything runs on time that should be achievable, but what is the routing? If you go into one of the concourse B satellites and out of E, you could be pushing it. Even riskier if you go the other direction and are at the back of the plane de-boarding.
If the price/timing isn't too terrible, I would look at a longer connection.

Ok now I actuslly read the thread,
The flights from AEX will be small regional jets, so if you gate checked your bag, that will add more time to the transfer. You can check the bag, I would think it has a better chance. You should debaord quickly but you will need to high tail it to the train and go to you next terminal. I suspect you will pull into B and leave from either E, or if its a regional jet to Canada maybe C.

7am is the first UA flight out, there is typically a 6:20 to DFW.
Coming home, you may pre-clear customs. Major Canadian airports have CBP facilities so you clear customs there, and arrive into the U.S. as if you were on a domestic flight. No customs/la migra in the states.
