Excited to say my wife loved her Valentine's Day present... first class tickets to Dublin on DL. Used miles and it was 99k per ticket round trip (got them in November).

This board loves Ireland and tons of awesome threads on the area. I will try to learn how to post pictures of the trip once we go and come back. I will go back to other threads, but if there are any absolute best places you ate/drank/ or visited feel free to let me know.

We are MSY-JFK-DUB and vice versa on the return. A bit of a long layover in JFK both times but have sky club access so it should be fine. Wife has never flown international first class and while we are only on a 767 it should be fine. I was hoping for the A330 but this will certainly do for the price.

We have not started the planning yet but I presume we will only spend 2 days in Dublin and the rest driving around outside the city based on what I have read in threads here.

Cheers!

Is the flight operated by DL or Virgin Atlantic?

If VA, definitely take advantage of the VA club at JFK and LHR, two of the nicest clubs I have ever seen. I will see if I can find a writeup from my trip to Ireland

We did Dublin-Galway-Dingle-Cork with stops along the way. I really enjoyed Kinsale and Kilkenny two towns we barely spent anytime in.

It is on DL metal unfortunately. I would have enjoyed a foreign carrier or VA.

Thanks for the cities. My goal is to stay at a SPG or Marriott brand (gross I know... lacks authenticity in my mind) because I have points to burn.

From what I remember, there was almost zero SPG/Marriott properties across the entire country....

very few hotels in general, a ton of airbnb's/B&Bs.

A total of 7 nights. The wife is limited on PTO... I have a laughable amount.

We like to eat and drink. We like to immerse ourselves in local culture to experience things. I couldn't care less about shopping and doing things I can do in the states.

I love having memories of a lifetime... be it a pint in a pub or a view you will never forget. We travel for the experience and expanding our personal perspectives.

That is fine. I love B&Bs and Inns. I would assume Dublin has a few properties but the countryside won't.

That is like trying to find a Westin in Bunkie, LA.

I'll be there in early June. Anyone have any day trip suggestions? Thinking about renting a car for a day. Possibly doing Howth, but I'm thinking about driving down to the national park about 60 minutes south of Dublin? We only have 3 days in Ireland, flying in and out of there for our England trip. Would like to do 2 days in Dublin and the middle day day trip somewhere around an hour away?

Octopussy's in Howth was probably the best meal I had in Ireland, It was damn good. The train will dump you right in the middle of Howth and is only about a 30min ride from Dublin.

Here is a quirky day trip suggestion if you like to walk in beautiful scenic places. Take the short DART ride from Dublin to Bray. Get out and walk along the Bray to Greystones Cliff Walk (maybe 2 hour walk) LINK. When you get to Greystones walk over to The Happy Pear LINK for a phenomenal vegetarian meal. Then take the DART back to Dublin.

I really want to eat some good seafood in Ireland and want to make it to Howth, maybe do a morning/ lunch there. I just would really like to make it out to the country too and I'm not sure 3 days is enough time for Howth and the Country. As much as I want seafood/ the coast of Ireland I feel like "ireland" is the countryside in a car type of thing.

That's what I'm looking to find really.

That place looks fantastic though, I'm going to try my best to get to Howth and that place. Is that a good like Morning trip with lunch by train and then go back to downtown Dublin in the afternoon/ evening for dinner?

Yes you really don't need to spend more than a couple hours in Howth. Take the train in the morning, walk around, eat lunch at Octopussys, go back to Dublin.

ETA I will add that renting a car is not as easy as in the States. You have to buy car insurance because the roads are so dangerous and in general, it takes a long time...

if you can avoid renting a car I would highly recommend it. Obviously you have to deal with driving a stick and on the left side of the road also.

I leave for Dublin on the 23rd of this month. Definitely doing the Greystones/Bray walk (weather permitting) mentioned upthread, and Howth has a similar cliff walk w/views out out to sea if you like that sort of thing. This walking guide: LINK
has some good stuff in it.

We will NOT be renting a car, due to the time of year (early sunsets means too much night driving), left side driving, and the pace of the trip....we will find plenty to occupy our time without needing a car. My goal isn't to cover the entire island, but rather to focus on Dublin/surrounds.

I booked a 2.5 hr food walking tour of Dublin through LINK / which focuses on Irish food producers/purveyors. Looking forward to checking out traditional cheeses, bread, etc.

I'm planning a family trip, probably in 2018 because of work. I want to fly into Dublin, do 4 nights there, then drive to Limerick and do 3 or 4 nights there. Then fly out of Shannon to come home.

If you're gonna spend a week in Ireland, you need to see the West. Limerick is a good central spot to hit a lot of those places,..... Kerry, Dingle, Galway, Cliffs of Moer, etc.

Thanks. I tried to get a return from Shannon but it didn't work. I will cross cross the country but if I don't hit everything I may just have to go back. ??

Went to Ireland last summer for 10 days. Great trip, lots of fun. Take advantage of the night life....see some live Irish music at a local pub. Enjoy!

Congrats, nice surprise move.

Just a couple of recs for your trip-

She'll like Adare village if your in North Kerry.

Cashel and/or Clonmacnoise if you can work it in.

New Grange is close to Stonehenge as to impressive. It's about an hour North from DUB.

The time I went, we got there straight off the plane at 9:00 am when it opened, had the first tour guide of the day by ourselves.

Avoid Blarney Castle. Go to Kinsale or visit Jameson's with the same amount of time when you're in south Cork.

Queenstown/Cobh is cool down there too.

A place to stay in Doolin on west coast (not a Marriott property):
Ballinalacken Castle Hotel Link

Think Fawlty Towers except fully functional and functioning.

Declan (the owner) let me tend bar for my party. He & his wife are great peeps and Doolin is cool.

Have a great trip whatever you do. Ireland ain't bad.

I'm half-assed looking for property there.

As a Marriott guy, if possible, use your points and stay at the Shelbourne in Dublin, which is near Upper Baggot street and some of the more famous non-touristy pubs (Toners, Foleys) in Dublin.

There is a great restaurant near there called Matt the Thresher that always has great fresh oysters. If you go out to Howth, I really like O'Connells near the end, but you really cannot go wrong there.

You will ultimately end up in Temple Bar, all tourists do, but it's like going to New Orleans the first time and not going on Bourbon St. I like the Auld Dubliner there which usually has one singer who is pretty good.

If you want to make the wife happy, you can always go down to Waterford and buy something there, and they do engraving for free. But there is the Waterford castle which is great to stay at and takes you back in time.

I am a big fan of Dingle and Kinsale (great great seafood and best in Ireland in my opinion) (Galway if you want to see the Cliffs of Mohr).
