I'm looking in mid-late October.... does that work? I want to avoid hurricane season as well.

Visit New Orleans. French quarter and downtown and warehouse district. No place like it. The best food anywhere!! Can't go wrong! And don't forget Magazine street and St. Charles st. The restaurants are endless!

You can fly to Atlanta, then Charleston, tour it, and drive to Savannah to tour it. Will be a great trip. The food in Charleston is excellent.

I hope you're straight, white, religious, conservative, and uneducated. If do, you'll fit right in

Atlanta to Charleston is about 5 hours with next to nothing on the way. A better bet if you're going to fly direct somewhere and rent a car to get there would be try Jacksonville (3-4hrs) or Orlando (~6hrs) then drive up the Atlantic Coast and check out some sights/beaches/sea islands along the way to Savannah. Charleston/Savannah don't take that long to explore for the most part. Then you could drive back quicker for your departing flight. Just a thought.
this would have been perfect, except lax direct to Jacksonville doesn't exist, so I'd have to fly to Orlando. The extra driving distance from Orlando makes this much less appealing.

Could also swing through the Delta for a taste of the blues and then up to Memphis

You really can't avoid the connecting flight if you're going to Charleston. Maybe fly into Asheville for a couple of days- then drive to Charleston and fly out of Charleston. Thing is, once you get out of NC, the drive to Charleston is flat straight interstate with nothing to see but trees. So, your better bet is 5 days in and around Charleston with two days in Savannah.
You could hit Hilton Head if you want. There's really not much there but golf/beach resorts. Nothing southern about it.
You will need a car, although it might stay parked for a couple of days in Charleston. The historic districts of both Savannah and Charleston are walkable (Savannah's is tiny). If you visit museums, beaches and historical plantations you have to drive.

OP you mentioned Raleigh and the surrounding areas. So its clear, I don't recommend it as a target to visit over the other places. IMO the triangle is better for living tham visiting. Asheville, Savannah, and Charleston are great.

"If you do" - try again.
Sigh - this is just a terrible thread in every way possible.
Asheville is great, as is Charleston and Savannah. But I wouldn't combine all three into one trip. Too little time to do them properly. Pick the mountains/Atlanta/Athens or the coast. One or the other. If it's the coast there is nothing of interest between there and Atlanta. I used to live between Atlanta and the "low country" (a useful term because it lets you know the seafood is bland and uninteresting) so I do know that pretty well.

That's just stupid. If you aren't a dumbass you would know that many cities in the south are much more progressive and have great restaurants and bars as well as very welcoming people. How about you keep your stupid arse on the OT with this crap.
