How does everyone on here go about booking their flights to Europe? I'm in the middle of booking a trip to Croatia, but I've never tried to really find deals in the past. My research is showing, as of now, that my best bet would be to fly into London, Germany, or Greece, then catching a budget European flight to Croatia/Montenegro. It's still coming out to be a little more expensive than I like, and as of right now I don't see any posted "deals" for flights to Europe during January from large carriers.

Should I wait for a special to come along from one of the main carriers? Or just go ahead and bite the bullet and deal with it? I dont mind paying the full price, but would just prefer not to if I can avoid it. Prices from Chicago to Dubrovnik are running between 1100-1400, but I don't mind doing a flight to somewhere else in Europe then catching the budget carriers each way. I have the miles to pay for it, but plan on saving them for a trip to Asia in the future.

Europe has been extremely cheap lately. Air Serbia JFK to Belgrade was $215 the other day RT.

I've seen Europe deals pretty much every few weeks the past 6 months.

For January in Europe I think you'll be able to score a deal. Just follow a bunch of travel blogs and keep watching.

Your cheapest flight will be flying in to Dublin, and then using Ryanair or a comparable airline to fly to wherever else in Europe.

I would keep watching and wait. You should be able to find a deal for a January flight in another couple of months. Another way to approach your search is to look at flying to NYC and then look for an international flight from there. Flights to NYC are dirt cheap depending on where you are. And flights from NYC to europe are usually cheaper than from Atlanta, Houston or DfW or wherever you are originating from. Drawback is you probably would have to connect in Europe and have another flight to Croatia.

Still, barring a big time deal, Dublin will be the cheapest place to fly to in Europe. From there you can take Ryanair to anywhere in Eorope for like 30 bucks.

Its $100 on ryan air to Zadar, Croatia which is the north part of the country. Thats the only place ryan air flies to in croatia. From there you can take an overnight ferry to Dubrovnik, which I have done and its nice. Its a cruise ship w/ bars and restaurants. Or a 6 hr bus ride. There is only 1 flight per week from Zadar to dubrovnik. So the question is where does the OP want to get to?

Thanks for that, will be on the lookout for Dublin. I was also looking into Flying into Greece. From Chicago to Athens is ~500. I dont know where I will be located in January, but this is a possibility, but will look more closely into NYC.

Appreciate the input! I actually had not thought of flying into Zadar, but was looking into Dubrovnik specifically. The ferry idea actually sounds really nice. I also looked into flying into Montenegro, because I would love to be there for a couple of days, but do not know about the transfer options from there to Dubrovnik. Any input would be appreciated.

Also, I've only spent one night in Croatia on long train ride, and it wasn't Dubrovnik. How long should I plan on staying? I obviously want to hit the main attractions, but the vacation will be around 8-9 days, not counting travel time, which I imagine will cut off nearly two days. I dont particularly plan on venturing much north of Dubrovnik, but wouldnt be opposed to a day trip somewhere. Right now just looking at maybe 3 days Montenegro, 3 days Dubrovnik. Haven't narrowed down much of an itinerary in Montenegro, yet.

That's what I figured. I assumed with that time being the lower season for Europe, especially somewhere like Dubrovnik, I would be able to score a cheaper ticket than what is being offered as of now. Whether I'm near Chicago or DFW at the time I wouldn't mind the added direct flight to NYC if I can score something extra cheap.

Checking into it now.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

There are some day trip tours from Dubrovnik which are a bus to Montenegro and then a boat ride through the fjords. Really nice. Or you could take a bus to Montenegro on your own. Bus is the main transport in croatia south of split. They were working on extending the train to dubrov but not sure where they are on that. 2 days is plenty in Dubrov unless you are making daytrips. Then you could stay there longer.

Far more cheap flight options to Croatia during summer tourist season, many European discount airlines dramatically cut back their schedules during off season. In my experience, Frankfurt always seems to provide best price with direct flight connections to Split, Zagreb or Dubrovnik. If you do fly into Zadar, consider renting a car with an overnight stop in Split on your way to Dubrovnik. Easy drive to Split (approximately 3 hours) on major new highway that's far better than any La interstate highway. No train service between Zadar and Dubrovnik, and IMO bus sucks and takes too damn long. A few years ago I flew Air Serbia from Belgrade to Amsterdam and thought it sucked. Sretan put!

Sorry, late to the party. We have flown multiple times to zagreb and split and sarajevo. last two times we found deals on Turkish Air, less than $800 and just booked for May next year for $750. Sale went off Oct 1, but just keep looking you can find deals, if you are flexible. (we have flown thru Frankfurt, Munich, London, Vienna, Venice and Istanbul.)
