Historic things to do in Boston

Mates, I've been to Boston a few times, but have always been a bit disappointed in the historical sites that I've seen. Obviously I've done the Freedom Trail and a couple of museums as well as Paul Revere's house, but are there any keen lantern lit-evening tours in or around Boston? Would love to see some historical costumes, etc while we learn about Revere's ride, etc. etc. Maybe the Freedom Trail tour is more romantic/fun at night?
Are there any tours in the surrounding areas of say John Adam's home?
Obviously doing Fenway Park and going to try all the hot restaurants but I haven't nailed the historical Boston the way I have New Orleans and Paris and Washington DC.

No.

You wouldn't be able to enter any of the sites at night, as they are closed.

Yes, I believe they do if you go out to Quincy. Haven't actually been though so I can't tell you whether it's worth it or not. I can tell you there's a solid diner across the street for breakfast.

Good luck, I've been here three years and am still making my way through all of the amazing restaurants up here.

Thanks mate - my moleskin city planner for Boston arrived today - it's what Hemingway used

No worries. If you have any questions about other stuff to do and places to eat, I'm happy to help out.

Mate, here's the gameplan
Wednesday arrival - hotel check in. Work day. Dinner at Uni (Japanese) in Back Bay or Sportello (modern upscale "diner")
Thursday 5PM dinner at SRV (upscale Italian) near Fenway. Red Sox game at 7PM
Friday lunch at Neptune Oyster Bay and Freedom Trail tour at 1:30PM. Revere's house / Old North Church if time permits. Dinner at Aiden and Harlow (highly touted, top restaurant in Boston currently).
Saturday brunch at Liquid Art House, then to Braintree for all things John and John Quincy Adams. Revere House / Old North Church (if not on Friday). Dinner at Cafe ArtScience (super douchey/trendy) or at Sportello / drinks
Sunday brunch at Committee, JFK Presidential Library, Boston Museum of Fine Art (or Contemporary, but less highly recommended). Sunday night comedy show downtown, then casual Japanese at Hojoko (gyoza, sashimi, beer).
Monday AM - depart

First off, welcome to Boston since you're here today. Going to have a beautiful week/weekend of weather.
Haven't been to Uni yet (SO doesn't like Japanese, much to my dismay), but I hear good things. Sportello is really good, make sure to get the lobster pizza as an appetizer. My friend is actually EC there.
I have to be honest with you, I was EXTREMELY disappointed with Alden and Harlow. Will never go back. I thought the food was mediocre and the service was sub-par. But perhaps I caught them on a bad night. But I can name 5 alternate places with a similar style that execute their menu much better.
Good call on LAH, but yeah Cafe ArtScience is pretty douchey. If you want to keep the trend of douchiness going, feel free to join me at my Crossfit gym in Braintree that morning.
I live about a 10 minute walk from there. It's amazing I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
Also, just out of curiosity: are you staying at the Liberty Hotel and that's why you have Sportello on your itinerary twice? Because I would get going there 2x for convenience purposes, but I would recommend seeing someplace else if you can. Lots of great spots to grab a drink.

Respectfully disagree with jb4. Union Oyster House is about as touristy a place as you can find in the city. Probably second most touristy behind the Cheers bar. Would highly recommend avoiding it.

Agreed. I really try and steer people visiting away, but so many people bring it up because it pops up in every tour guide of the city you ever see.

I didn't have to open the link to know it was Union.

Movie at the Harbor Hotel
Not historic, but might be fun to catch coming back from JFK/ICA/etc.
The hotel is very nice. The food is pretty good, but hotel prices. You go for the ambience though. It would be a decent walk, but you could walk the dig back to the liberty.

Mate, tell him we were the couple fighting on Sunday night. Was awful - we get along very well but for some reason seem to argue on vacations 1 night out of the trip. This one was over room service
Anyways highlights foodwise were Alden & Harlow and Cafe Artscience (was very dubious about this but it was amazing) and then brunch at Mistral French/Mediterranean place that was epic - got shitfaced on Bloody Marias which probably led to the fight later that afternoon/night
Non food highlights were Red Sox game - walking around area before and walking along the Old North church area after dinner at Mama Maria on Friday night. Also the John Adams tour and JFK museums were epic.
Fine city - would be very happy living there.

Yeah stayed at the Liberty - got a decent "birthyear" rate and it was a decent boutique 4.5 star hotel. The best part was it was quiet in the tower and the free bike loans which helped us get around and added some extra fun to the trip.

what was good was the belgian french fry place right next door. We had a $50 dozen oysters and beers at Union which were great but the fries and mayo and beers we snuck out and ate on the footsteps of the music event was way more fun for only $10 or so. Then we walked through the Holocaust memorial and cried but it was fun while it lasted

Bell in Hand Tavern (est. 1795, at the same location since 1844) for a pint.
It's a nice respite from walking.

Sounds like y'all had a good trip. The weather seemed to cooperate for the most part during your time here, which is good. Although it was hot Saturday, but not by Louisiana standards.
Glad to hear y'all enjoyed A&H and the JFK Museum.
I definitely enjoy living here. It's a great city. Glad you had an enjoyable time.

JFK Library is neat, you can take T all the way there.
You can drive to Plymouth in about 40 minutes or so. See where the Pilgrims landed, neat little historical town.
Another short drive is to Salem, check out the witch museums.
