I haven't been to GS since I was a kid and we're looking for a quick get away that's not too far from home.

How is Gulf Shores as far as things to do and places to visit?

the closer to florabama the better IMO. unless you have no intentions of drinking.

I mean, what are you looking to get out of it? Are you just looking for a place where you can chill on the beach or by a pool? If so, the Gulf Shores area is fine. They have decent golf in the area if you're looking for that. If you want something with a bit more nightlife, you may want to keep going down the coast a little further to Destin.

Orange Beach is great if you want to go chill for three or four days. As long as you aren't going on a big holiday weekend it's not crazy crowded and I can tell you that the trashy comments are not true.

Is this for a family or just you and the lady?

We used to like going in this area with the kids as it had all we needed and didn't feel the need to drive an hour further to a more crowded Destin.

Consider Perdido Key as well.

There is an amusement park of some sort not far away. Never been to it, but I remember passing it a few times.
