Grand Canyon - White water rafting

Have a friend getting married, wants to do a white water rafting trip to the grand canyon. I've heard of companies that'll take you on a 3-4 day trip, provide food etc. and you camp out along the canyon.
Anyone done it?
Best time of year?
Ballpark costs?
Company recommendations?
TIA

Personally, I'd just do an overnight on the Arakansas River in Colorado. Check the Canon City or Royal Gorge area. Class IV and V rapids can be found there.

1. Grand Canyon Rafting, Arizona At one point, the waiting list for river permits in the Grand Canyon was 27 years. Now there’s an elaborate weighted lottery system and you have about a one in eight chance at getting a permit through the system. Odds are better if you pick less popular months like December and January instead of September. The way around the permit system? Pay for a spot on a commercially guided trip.

AZ Raft
There are a ton of commercial companies that will take you. This one was the one I was looking at doing, and the shortest trip is 6-7 days. They have Upper/Lower Canyon options, and you hike in and out on the Bright Angel Trail on the South Rim.

I went at the end of May this year on a 7 day trip oar powered trip along the Lower Canyon. We hiked 10 miles down to the river from the rim and then hop in the boats and go down about 130 miles of the Colorado River. The last day you camp at a site where a helicopter picks you up in the morning and takes you back.
It was incredible I would highly recommend it, but it's expensive the total trip came out to about $3500.
We went with Hatch River Expeditions it's the only family owned river company left in the Grand Canyon and one of our guides was actually a Hatch family member.
Best time of year is May as June and July get incredibly hot.
And you have to book early I think we had it booked about a year and a half in advance.

Have you considered Big Bend?

Well worth the money. Went with OARS, highly recommend. For 5-6 days you can either do upper canyon and hike out, or hike in and do lower canyon. Scenery and experience in the canyon is incredible

Bottom of Grand Canyon is usually around the same temps as it is in Phoenix.
And it's gonna get up to 120 this weekend in the Phoenix area.

That sounds badass. What's included in the price?

Isn't that the company the guy on the CNN show went with?

Watched that episode...would LOVE to take a trip like that. Looked amazing.
But expensive. But....considering that booking those trips are a way to get around how hard it is to get a permit to raft in the GC...now I see why it's so pricey.

They provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast was usually eggs and some type of meat and fruit. Lunch was sandwiches they just have a table with meat and cheese and you make your own. All of the dinners were really good we had fish tacos, carne asada, steak, spaghetti, and then burgers and brauts. They also had really good trail mix type snacks they would give you throughout the day.
Other than that everything they provide is just amazing experiences and knowledge of the canyon. Everyday you would stop at a couple places to hike up to a waterfall or cave or just hang back and chill in some pools. Most of the spots they take you to are only accessible by boat. The view as you float down the river is absolutely incredible.
And I'm sure the helicopter ride is about a few hundred a person.

Level of service and expertise with OARS is very high. Have done 3 trips with them. They are solid.

I'm headed to the Canyon in October to hike. While doing a little reseach I found this video about deaths in the Grand Canyon, and they have a section about rafting. I think they say it's pretty safe, considering you're tempting death. But anywho, here's the vid: Lessons from Life and Death in Grand Canyon
