Has anyone on this board been to either of these countries? Looking for recommendations.

MnM posted a little bit in my thread asking for comments.

But it's pretty much what you'd generally read to do in Myanmar.
When ya going?

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll try to answer them. I went to Myanmar in 2012.

Nice. Looking at late September/October of next year.
I'll be hanging around hoping to keep this thread alive.
Do you already have tickets? I've read a lot of posts that tickets involving Columbo can routinely be pretty cheap. I believe originating so something to look at on the return maybe.

I can speak to Colombo.
I worked there a couple times:
- I always stay at the Galle Face Hotel, which is old school, but has a great little museum of former guests who stayed there, both good and bad. Plus you are right beside the Galle Face green which is an open market with lots of food and trinkets.
- I am not much into Buddhists sites as I have seen too many, but if you have not I liked Sri Ponnambalam Vanesar Kovil and Sri Kailawasanathan Swami Devasthanam Kovil (last one is great for close up pics of the figures) Others will say Vahara but always too busy when I have been there
- as for food, get the string hoppers, they are soo delicious. They are cheap and can be gotten about everywhere. But if you are looking to splurge, but I loved the Ministry of Crab. Get the garlic ones and thank me later. Also, I liked Lamprais, which is lumped rice with meat. People will swear by the Sour Fish Curry, but I was not a fan and I like curry.
If you are interested in nightlife, I can give recommendations of a year ago.

So, I'm still researching Myanmar.
I'm a sucker for British Colonialism, so a stop at The Strand Hotel is a must. There also appears to be good spots called "The Kipling Bar" as the Governor's Residence and the Gallery Bar at the Trader Hotel/Shangri-La hotel.
Also, google "The Pegu Club". It is sad to see what state that building is in and how cool it would be if restored, though I can somewhat understand the hesitation to restore the accomplishments of people who subjugated you.
It looks like a lot of the colonial buildings are down Strand road and the area around it. Some have been restored by NGOs and some still in disrepair.
The usual 7-10 day itinerary looks like Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay, and Inle Lake back to Yangon. However, I think I just have to see Naypyitaw. That is just too weird to miss.
