Going to Paris w the family (4 total)
Posted by junior on 5/27/16 at 9:38 pm00
1st time going to Europe. Plan on going next summer. Plan to spend most of the time in Paris. Any recs on where to stay (hotel vs rent a apartment)?
What is a reasonable cost for a flight?
Things to avoid, all advice welcome.

Rent an apt for sure. Something near the center of the city makes it real easy to get around. Notre Dame is actually the dead center of Paris so anything in that area is nice. Close to Latin Quarter, etc

I'd rent an apartment in the next 30 days. Get something with a small kitchen and balcony. The best stuff books a year out often times for peak times.

I've used booking.com to book quad occupancy hotel rooms and suites. Use the filter to search for what you want.
A typical roundtrip flight will probably be in the range of $1500 per person in summer.
If you don't already have passports for everyone, get them ASAP. If you already have passports, make sure they don't expire within 6 months of the return date. Adult passports are good for 10 years, child passports for 5 years.
Stay away from popular restaurants in the tourist centers. They're all overpriced and not very good. Ask the locals where they go to eat.
Use the metro system, its very efficient. However, be careful as it can get very crowded and always have your wallet either in a front pocket or use a neck pouch or money belt.
Never have only one person carrying all the money and credit cards in Paris. Split them up. Don't carry more than a couple hundred dollars worth of currency. If you need more, then use your debit card at an ATM. Use credit cards to pay as much as possible.

Be careful with apartments. The city is really cracking down on them. Twice we stayed at a parisbestlodge.com apt. and had great experiences. We were in Paris for a week in April and couldn't even get in contact with PBL. We ended up staying at the Westin Hotel which was great.

I just left Paris and stayed in Airbnb locations the whole time. Found that it was a great way to be a part of the city. Not sure if they have places for 4 people, but would definitely look into it as an option!

With the caveat I mentioned above about the city cracking down on rentals, I have a recommendation for you. Go to parisbestlodge .com and look at the different apartments. They have a great selection of apts. in good locations and their prices are very reasonable. Much cheaper than nice hotels. For a two bedroom for 4 people check out the Castex apt. Good location. The Bastille and its metro station is 2 blocks to the north and the back end of Ile St. Louis is 2 blocks to the south. One problem. No central AC but they bring you portable units.
