Galveston for a week

Going in early-July to Galveston beach for a week with the family. Looking for restaurants, things to do, etc. Is the beach decent, or is it more Mississippi-esque?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Pretty sure Mississippi beaches are way better than Galveston beaches

I'd rather off myself than spend a week in Galveston.
It's God's cruel joke that for multiple reasons, I've been there 4 times.

I spent a weekend at the emerald luxury apartments there. They have a sweet infiniti pool, hot tub, and swim up bar with a big grill. It was pretty nice, and not very expensive. The beaches suck though.

Alabama,Fl gulf coast as close depending on area is the answer,NOT Galveston. Beaches and water maybe one step above Grand Isle maybe 2 at their best. Galveston is old, dirty and boring.

If you like to fish then you'll be able to do that pretty easily.

You can find things to do in and around Galveston. Don't expect it to be a beach destination type place. That it is not.

I just left Galveston working in the shipyard. Going out every night and some days I can tell you I wouldn't do over a weekend there for vacation.

Yeah, I didn't pick Galveston, and it sounds like we need to make the best of a bad situation. What about Schlitterbahn and Moody Gardens? Worth doing?

As mentioned, Rudy & Paco's for a good dinner. Mario's on 61st Street for the best pizza and fettuccine alfredo. Everything in Galveston is as casual as you'd expect from a beach town. A half day of shopping down in the Strand District. Pleasure Pier on the Seawall. Best pool with swim up bar in town is at the San Luis Hotel on the seawall. Not sure where you are staying but they used to sell "season passes" that could be worth the expense. Best in town beach is also in front of the San Luis. Beaches on west end of island will be much less crowded than in town. If the surf gets flat and tides are right there will be speckled trout everywhere in the surf.

Despite agreeing that the beaches are shitty by comparison, I lived in the area for 10+ years, and there is enough to do.
If you do want to do the beach, East beach and the seawall will be an absolute clusterf*** during that time. Drive west on the seawall towards Surfside. After Galveston "ends" on your right, there are several public beach accesses on your left until you reach Surfside. That's your best bet for less crowding, good size, and minimal seaweed.
For other water stuff, Schlitterbahn if you have older kids, and Moody Gardens Palm Beach for younger ones. We were Moody members for the past 5 years, and regularly visited everything they offered, even as permanent residents. Palm beach is great for that 3-5 year old range, but after that the kids are kind of too big for most of the stuff. The aquarium is ok, the rainforest is very cool. Freaking tamed birds and monkeys run right up to you in there. There is not too much other stuff to do around town. A cool little aviation museum next to Moody Gardens, and a nice golf course attached.
Pleasure pier is fun for the kids, but is mainly an expensive tourist trap. Same for the Kemah Boardwalk and anything else owned by Landry's.
There is a Top Golf 28 miles North in Webster that is well worth it if you have never played there. Giant mall and retail area right next door for the wife. Baybrook is a nice mall. And NASA Johnson Space Center is right there as well.
For food, in order: Rudy & Pacos, Clarys, Saltwater Grill, Olympia Grill, Mosquito Cafe, Farley Girls, Millers Cafe, Cafe Michael Burger, Pho 20 ( ), Shrimp N Stuff, Sonnys (hole in the wall local joint).
Bars are mostly on the Strand, so you can bar hop there, or pick a seawall place with a patio to drink at.
Anything specific you're looking for?

Just make sure you don't go during Kappa Beach Party, if that even still goes down in Galveston these days.

We're staying on the beach a little east of Galveston Island State Park. We'll have kids ranging from 4-14 in our group, so looking like we'll be hitting both Schlitterbahn and Moody Gardens.
Not looking for anything specific, I'll probably play golf one morning, we'll eat out a couple of nights, etc., just never been before and from what I heard/hear the beach is awful. Always good to have a list of decent things to try once cabin fever sets in.
What's the best golf course to play in the area? Don't mind driving a little bit, and I can probably get my pro to attempt to get me on a private course if one is worth playing.

Ok, so you're not in a bad place for easy/quick beach access. Every few miles to your west should have public beach access. Every now and then one of them will be owned by the condo property companies, but they are usually so empty nobody gives you any shite for being on those beaches. you can also park publicly and walk to the more private areas.
Alternatively, if you really want some privacy for a long beach day, you'll drive over St. Luis pass after about 15-20 miles of driving west. There is a beach under the pass, but it's very dangerous b/c of rip currents. People hang out there, but it's stupid. People drown there every year. After going over the pass, you can drive on any public beach you see on your left. It will be big and mostly empty other than people surf fishing. It's secluded and mostly a fishing spot with access to the surf and Christmas Bay very close to one another.

Moody is your best bet to stay close. It's very nice since Tillman renovated it. Bring alot of balls.
Courses worth traveling to from your location aren't too many. Timber Creek is in Friendswood, about a 40 minute drive north. Probably the best value for a 36 hole course in the entire city. Otherwise you're traveling into Houston or other suburbs. If you really want to do that, there are a shite ton of great courses for you to choose from. Magnolia Creek is a nice, private linx course that is close to Galveston. Used to be public, and I played it alot when it was.

Seriously, split up on water park day. The two parks are on the same campus, so access to the car would be easy for either party. The big kids will be bored to death at Palm Beach, and the little kids can't ride anything except the wave pool and lazy/wave river at schlitterbahn.

It does. Strand retail stores started closing in recent years and the organizers got pretty pissed!
