Curious about travelers who have traveled for a duration longer than a regular 1-3 week vacation that typical working life allows for.

How long did you travel? What was your life situation that gave you the flexibility? Did you quit your job and was it worth it?

I try to take off a few continuous weeks each year to travel abroad, but I'd love to travel for months at a time. The only real opportunity I see to try this though is to quit working for a while.

Traveled for 1 month through SE Asia. I was making a career change so just left my previous employment early. My wife is a photographer so she had flexibility.

Met a bunch of people along the way who just quit their job, sold everything, and started traveling.

This past November wife and I traveled for 28 days. We started in South Africa, did a safari in Botswana, finished the African trip in Cape Town and then cruised for 2 weeks across the Atlantic (visited St. Helena) and and finished with 3 days in Rio.

I have always believed if I am going to fly across the world, I might as well spend as many days as possible when I am there.

My wife and I traveled for almost 3 months in our late twenties after she finished graduate school (and I convinced my employer to keep me around after the sabbatical).

We spent all of our time in Asia, New Zealand, and Australia. I would have extended the trip into Africa, but the Mrs. said enough. I concentrated on those areas over Europe and South America because I figured it would be easier to get to those places later within the confines of children, maintaining employment, etc. So far, that is definitely true.

We moved around a lot. The longest we spent in any one single place was the Maldives (a week). I'm glad to have done it that way because we experienced a lot and now have a better idea of where to go back. I also relied heavily on points and miles obtained through playing the credit card game. This allowed us to do the trip much nicer than would have been possible otherwise.

To answer your question...It was absolutely worth it. I love travelling and was able to fit in a decade's worth of vacations in a short period. I'd do it again when our kid is old enough to enjoy it (and if we can make it work from a practical standpoint).

Plus, don't underestimate the freedom that comes with having that long of a period of time off. Walking out of my last day of work was a feeling like I hadn't had since leaving high school for the summer. If you're gone for 2 months+. It is like you're truly disconnected. A month or less, it is just like hitting the pause button and everything builds up while you're gone - at least in my line of work.

I wouldn't go into credit card debt or anything like that, but if you can make it work - go for it.
