Does anybody have any recommendations for activities for families with young kids in January at Estes Park? I've looked up a bunch of stuff on the website, and a lot of it sounds great:

- Ice Fishing
- Snowshoeing
- Sledding / Tubing
- Scenic drives (any recs?)

Is there anything specific that any of you recommend to do this time of year? We'll only be there a few days but want find a few things that we can do with a young kids, starting at 3 years old.

It's an awesome place and it sounds like you have a general idea of family friendly entertainment. The only thing I do there in winter months is hit backcountry so I'm of no help

You could snowshoe and sled at hidden valley which is a former ski resort. Estes Park mountain shop can hook you up on the rental needs for snowshoes and whatnot. They are really friendly and all around awesome there if you need trail advice

I think Trout Haven pond has ice fishing and ice skating right now. no license required while you are there. We went during summer and the kids loved it

RMNP has you covered on everything except for maybe fishing. Snowshoeing everywhere, just depends on your fitness level as to how far you want to go. Scenic drives everywhere again, the trail ridge road in the park is closed for the winter. Sledding at Hidden Valley in the park is good. You'll need to bring your own sled or rent one in town.

For sledding at Hidden Valley, is it just 1 hill? And can you rent tubes there or do I need to also get that ahead of time. I'm thinking the wife will be more up for tubing, but I'll sled with the kids.

Are there any super easy / short trails for snowshoeing that at least a 3 year old can handle?

They don't rent anything in the park so you need to rent in town ahead of time and hidden valley used to be a ski area so there are different runs. The lifts are gone now but some folks still do cross country skiing and hike to backcountry runs. Its good for all ages and all levels. People usually only sled on one hill there. It's mellow and fun.

Bear lake loop in the park is great for kids. It's less than a mile the whole way around and is flat. You'll dig all of it.

ETA-I am assuming you are flying into DIA then will drive through Lyons on the way to Estes. If this is the case stop at St Vrain Market in Lyons and grab some sandwiches.

Also, if you want pot there is a great shop right when you enter Lyons at the corner of 66 and 36 called the Cannabis Company. I recommend it highly, pun intended.

Estes Park Mountain Shop is pretty damn close to the park entrance and everything else in town. Go there because they are awesome and will give you better suggestions than we are capable of

Good advice IMO

Stick to that hill, which will be obvious, or fear for your child as the backcountry skiers and boarders come ripping down toward you

Awesome suggestions! Thanks everyone. Is the town itself pretty cool. Any suggestions for food in Estes or just cool places to check out?

The View at Historic Crags Lodge has the best food in town. I haven't really enjoyed anywhere else I have eaten there so I usually stop at St Vrain in Lyons and grab sandwiches to bring with me. Barrel is a cool spot but I think it is closed until May. You don't go to Estes to eat and drink, you are there for the mountains. They are enough, you are going to love it.

The city is cool enough to walk around for a couple hours or so. There isnt much to it but it is not bad.

Another cool drive is the Peak to Peak Hwy which runs down to Black Hawk where the casinos are, very scenic drive.
